Yao carrying the torch in China...how about in Houston?

We are getting ready to watch the Olympics in Beijing and to get things started, our guy and China's most recognizable figure Yao Ming will be the CENTER of attention. I watched yesterday as the bigger than life 7'6" postman carried the Olympic torch into the host city. It was quite a festivity and I sat at my desk wondering if Yao will ever lead the Rockets to a celebration like he is seeing in his homeland.

yao.jpgWell, it won't be that big but it will be close if he can do it. Texans love to party and Texans love to celebrate championships. We haven't had too many in the Houston area but when it happens its "bigger and better" than everywhere else. It's just the Texas way!

Yao will be heading into his 7th season with the Rockets. It has been an interesting career to say the least. He came in as a unique individual and everyone had an opinion on if he could make it in the physical and demanding game of NBA basketball. This guy doesn't even need to jump to touch the rim he was so big so logic says, he could control the paint just by standing in there. But remember what former Rocket and analyst Charles Barkley said. He expressed many times Yao would not live up to all the hype. In fact, if I remember correctly, he told sidekick and another former Rocket Kenny Smith, he was going to kiss his _ _ _ if Yao scored 19 points in a game in his first year and Yao did it against the Lakers. So Kenny made Charles kiss a donkey he bought and do it on national television. That was quick thinking on Kenny's part.

Maybe Charles should put his foot in his mouth and make the same deal with Kenny about Yao leading the Rockets to an NBA championship. The time is certainly NOW for the Rockets. They just added Ron Artest to go along with T-Mac and a strong cast of solid players. But we all know it starts in the middle. China's famous son is in the middle of things right now in his homeland and he knows what it takes to hold up in the middle of an NBA season and it's not easy. Injuries have shown him that.

I can picture what another NBA title would be like here in Houston. McGrady, Artest, Battier, and Alston would get some attention but Yao would be the main focus carrying the torch. I'm looking forward to that.

Do you think it will ever happen?

Rockets better trade Yao and McGrady while they still have ridiculous 'all-star' stock. These guys simply aren't champions. They're happy with an early end to the season. Rockets won't win with them on the roster.

yao is not that good he should average 20 rebounds a game 5 block shots and 30 points a game , he can't he is too slow can't jump he is ok but nothing like hakeem or heck i can name off 20 centers that are better than him , barkley would had run circles on yao
