We are getting ready for the NBA draft. Yeh right in the middle of the Astros woes and just prior to Texans getting started, it's high stakes for NBA franchises. It's often been said, "you've gotta have the horses to win the race." That is certainly the case as Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey, along with all of his draft experts, get ready to add young players to make the playoffs and win a postseason series.

The draft is a peculiar thing. You never really know if you are going to hit gold with one of your picks or if the players selected will get their bonus money and hit the road. In fact, you can analyze a player to death and on paper, everything will look great but then he will fail to live up to expectations.

Also, you never know if you are going to make a selection or make a trade. If someone presents a solid veteran player, it's tough to keep those draft choices. There are so many different scenarios and I guess that's what makes it so interesting.

I love the way Morey does things. Thumbnail image for landry.jpgLast year in his first draft, he certainly found a diamond in the rough in Carl Landry. Landry became quite a force with his quick jumping ability and toughness inside. I was talking to Tracy McGrady one day and he told me when Landry grabbed a rebound and stuffed it back in the basket over Spurs superstar Tim Duncan, he knew the kid was going to be something special.

Aaron Brooks was also added. He might be the quickest kid in the NBA and should be more of a contributor this season. Neither of those players are short on talent. I don't see them not making the team.brooks.jpg

The Rockets have the 25th pick in the first round and the 54th overall. If Morey can find another Landry,, he could be labeled a genius for evaluating talent. With the current cast of characters, adding another kid with young legs and a big heart could get them past the first round. How refreshing would that be?

What do you think the Rockets need to do? Post your comments below.
