So the Texans are going through their mini camp. I went down to watch on Friday afternoon and liked what I saw. It was good to see cornerback Dunta Robinson out on the field watching as he is trying to comeback from a terrible injury to his leg suffered last season. There was big offensive tackle Charles Spencer still hobbling after being out a full season with his leg injury but he was giving it a try. That is what these off season practices are all about. It's a chance for the coaches to get everyone together to assess their condition. Quaterback Matt Shaub looks like he is coming along nicely. Remember, he had shoulder surgery and the Texans are hoping he can find a way to stay healthy but he was throwing well even hitting Andre Davis on a deep touchdown pass. I can't believe how big quarterback Quinn Gray is. He was signed by the Texans this off season as an unrestricted free agent coming from Jacksonville. He's 6'3" weighing in at about 250. He's a large man. I also couldn't believe the stature of running back Chris Brown. He too is 6'3" and that is tall for a running back. The Texans are hoping the talented free agent from the Titans will help the lack lustre running game. I spent some time talking to Texans strength coach Dan Riley. He is one of the best in the business and I wanted to know what kind of condition this team is in. He told me he felt encouraged as he said the gap between the workaholics and the those more casual in their approach is narrowing. He saw the same thing in Washington as the Redskins won the Super Bowl. Bettering yourself in the off season is one key to success and Riley sees players pushing each other to get better. It used to be you could take some time off after the regular season but it is clear, in today's game, the life of a pro football player in the NFL is a full time job. |
