How would you like to go home and tell mom and dad that your new baseball coach is soon to be Hall of Famer Craig Biggio? That's right, the guy who has a statue outside Minute Maid Park. It's going to happen to the kids over at St. Thomas High School tomorrow. Since retiring from professional baseball, Biggio has spent his evenings over on the campus at Memorial and Shepard. First, after retiring, he was a walk on football coach. You heard it first on Channel 11. He was coaching the defensive backs and I can guarantee those players on that side of the ball have never been challenged quite like dealing with him. I called him shortly after he started and in his own way told me he had to have a meeting with them to help them understand the commitment they needed to make to be good. I can only imagine it was a one sided conversation with those kids trembling in their cleats with how he likes it to be. I invited Craig to my golf tournament and he told me he could play until about 2 because he had a big game and he couldn't miss it. He was not officially on the staff at the high school but he wanted to show the players how much he cared. Now he's the new head baseball coach at St. Thomas. I can promise you those youngsters will have their uniforms dirty after every practice and certainly after every game. They will get a dose of "how I used to do it" and they should. If they can just put forth a tenth of the effort on their level as Biggio did on his, look out for St. Thomas on the diamond in the future. All indications are that he will have the Eagles soaring in short order. 3 CommentsLeave a comment |

Finally, something good and positive from the Astros organization. We as Houstonians have always embraced the Biggio era and what he does done for this city we call home. It is so easy for someone to judge, Roger as an example. We loved him, screamed his name when he took the field, praised him for what he has done for the city. Now, most everyone has joined the band wagon in slamming his name and credibility. Lets share more of the stories that are of interest to Houstonians, not the mudslinging that Roger is going through. Personally, his personal life is really none of our business, his professionalism and what he brought to our city, thats news.. CONGRATS BIGGIO !!!!!
I can't think of a better way for someone who has had the EXTREME SUCESS that Biggio has had than to take a step forward to teach young people ..
in Sport.. and in LIFE that they can find RESPECT and HONOR.. as he has.
Go Bigge!
This has made Matt and I think a little more about sending our future children to Catholic schools! ;)
