Let me take you back a few years when the Astros were going through all of their winning seasons even making it to the World Series. The pitching was superb and those of us who cover the games along with all the fans attending, heard a constant buzzing sound at the park when the KILLER BEES came to the plate. It was referring to all the players whose last name started with "B". You remember the order. First it was Biggio, then Burke, on to Berkman, cleaned up by Bagwell. Carlos Beltran joined into the theme around here for a short time and Geoff Blum had some huge hits and now he's back with the team. I'm not sure who is responsible for the nickname but when opposing teams came to Houston, they new they were going to get buzzed. One of the great things about sports, it's entertainment. You can have fun watching, playing and even making up ways to identify your favorite players. Astro announcer Milo Hamilton is an expert doing it. He's got names for everyone. I was watching game one with the Nationals Tuesday night as the Astros cameback to win another one and nearly fell off my chair laughing when TV announcers Bill Brown and Jim Deshaies started talking about the Astros version of the BLT and don't forget the pickle. They were talking about the powerful hitting combination of Berkman, Lee and Tejada with Hunter Pence completing the delicacy. Pence, of course, is the pickle. How did those guys come up with that recognition? I just got off the phone with Deshaies and he told me a fan made a sign over the weekend and they saw it. From there, with those two personalities, the nickname was framed. Those four players were 10 for 18 against Washington in the first contest with Berkman leading the way going 5 for 5. Anybody could dine on that helping. Astros manager Cecil Cooper is having some indigestion with the way the Astros are winning, but there is no question, his stomach is full! |
