Sergio winning is great for golf

As Sergio Garcia stood before the crowd after winning The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra on Sunday, the smile came through broadly as he thanked Tiger Woods for not playing. What he was really trying to say, with Tiger being injured, it gives everyone else a chance.

So goes life on the PGA tour. The Players Championship is considered, by many, as the fifth major of the year. The golf course is set up hard and fast. It's almost impossible to stop the ball on the green, the rough is so thick, if you end up out of the fairway, look out, everyone is in danger of being hit by errant shots. To show you how hard it was to play the track, only four golfers ended up under par.

To have the Spaniard win helps out a sport needing a shot in the arm. Right now, if Tiger is playing, it's considered an exhibition. He's so good, even in the players minds, it's over before it begins. Literally everyone else is competing for second and that is bad for the game. Sergio is one guy who has the talent to match-up with the world's number one player and make things exciting again. We all thought Phil Mickelson would be that guy or maybe young Adam Scott but they have not stepped up the to challenge. They are good all right but not Tiger good.

Garcia is not there either but watching him this week reminded me of his incredible talent. He looks like he's been lifting, looks stronger or he was wearing skimpier shirts. He might be able to win an arm wrestling contest with Woods. That, in itself, is encouraging.

I remember watching the battles between Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. How about Jack and Tom Watson. It will be enjoyable to see if Garcia's career will take a major jump forward after this win. We've been waiting for someone to growl at Tiger consistantly and Sergio has all the tools to do it. Will it happen? Time will tell, but he has the game and the charisma to do it.
