Berkman's a Blast!

Covering sports in this town for the last 24 years has given me an opportunity to rub shoulders with many different types of athletes. Some are solid citizens, some are shady. Some are funny, some are boring. Some enjoy the limelight, some shy away. Some are talented, some are work-a-holics. Some are fast, some are slow. I could go on and on. However, once in a while you run across one who is hard to describe and that is the Astros Lance Berkman.

Don't take this the wrong way. Sir Lance, as he has appropriately been named, carries all of the positive qualities named above but he is so much more. He has never taken himself seriously and that is such an amazing quality in a sport when you normally fail seven out of ten times.

Right now, with the way he is playing, when Lance Berkman heads to the plate, he is successful nearly four out of ten times and that ranks first or second in all of major league baseball in 10 different categories. He is so hot, he has put the Astros squarely on his shoulders. With him leading the way, they have won nine of their last ten and have been on the top side of the first four road games during 10 away from Minute Maid Park.

To put what he is doing into perspective, only 9 nine players since 1957 have had 21 hits in 30 at bats. It's select company when you are talking about Rico Carty, Rod Carew and "Charlie Hustle" Pete Rose.

One guy told me today, he can't stop watching the Astros even though the games are late on the west coast. He wants to see what Berkman does everytime he grabs a bat.

During this run, Lance hasn't changed a bit. He is the same guy just like last season when he got off to the most miserable start in his professional career. He is not afraid to laugh at himself during the good times and the bad. He had me in stitches one day when he was telling me about the time Rice Head Coach Wayne Graham told him he was the worst player he has ever coached. That really wasn't the case, but sometimes Berkman does goofy things and the stories keep coming.

I hope we are all watching closely what is going on here. It could turn at any minute but right now, Berkman is "Sir Lance" in every sense of the title.
