No nonsense draft for the Texans

The NFL draft is an event that seems to be getting bigger and bigger. With so much pre draft coverage and then wall to wall analysis, the thought is, everyone knows so much about a player, one can predict whether or not he will be successful or be a bust. But in reality you just never know what will happen.

It's really important who gets picked by what team. An organization is trying to stock pile talent but the intangibles can't be measured and that's where the problems surface. Everyone thought David Carr was going to be the quarterback around here for 10 to 15 years but that didn't happen. Nobody questioned his athletic ability but there was always something missing. It seemed like most local fans didn't want Mario Williams in the Reggie Bush-Vince Young or Williams sweepstakes but the Texans pick is looking pretty solid right now.

The thing I like about what the Texans are doing right now is addressing needs. They are coming right out and in true Gary Kubiak style, expressing publicly what they want and then going about getting the players they feel will help them. General Manager Rick Smith, along with Kubiak, told the media prior to the draft, they were looking for a left tackle, a defensive back and a running back. They also indicated they wanted a pass rushing defensive end if they could get one but the needs were listed in that order.

So what did they do. With their first pick they selected Duane Brown, the most athletic tackle in the draft and did so by trading down getting additional picks...Brilliant! Brown has a tremendous upside. They didn't have a second round pick but in the third round, they selected a defensive back from Eastern Kentucky Antwaun Molden...Right on point! With their additional pick in the third round, they selected running back Steve Slaton, a speedster out of West Virginia... Bullseye!

It's nice to see the Texans get into a situation where they can start to draft by need. They haven't always been able to do that. It gives an organization so many more options when you have that luxury. No confetti, no balloons, just NO NONSENSE selecting during the 2008 draft for the team from Houston. You never know what the future holds but hopefully it will pay big time dividends in the future.
