HPD cop wants sex change operation

An officer with the Houston Police Department is asking for time off to undergo a sex change operation.

Sgt. Jack Oliver said he has agonized for years over the decision to become a woman.

He said he's underwent a lot of therapy before making the decision.

Sgt. Oliver began the preoperative phase of becoming a woman about four months
ago.

He said he decided to come forward a few weeks ago when he began showing more feminine characteristics.

He plans to take a leave of absence to complete the transformation by having surgery.

He is a veteran officer who works out of the Fondren Substation in southwest Houston.
