Audio Report: Trial under way for 'Galleria Area Rapist'
11 News' Karla Barguiarena reports from the Criminal Justice Center downtown where a trial is under way for the so-called Galleria area rapist.
Juan Reyes Solis, 23, is accused of beating, abducting and sexually assaulting a female hair salon employee who worked in the Galleria.
Police said Solis approached the victim inside the Galleria, kidnapped her and took her to an unknown location on August 30, 2003. That is where they said he tried to kill her after he raped her.
HPD looked for the suspect without knowing he was already in jail for trying to break into an ATM.
It wasn't until DNA was matched that prosecutors were able to talk to the victim.
Solis has pleaded not guilty.
The victim is expected to testify, but it is not yet known if the suspect will take the stand.
