My grandma lives in Wharton and we've been passing that run down motel for years. I've always wished it was open so I could stay there. I'm glad someone decided to remodel and reopen. Thanks for stopping by there - we'll definately be checking it out the next time we're down that way.

I too am glad that someone has decided to remodel and reopen the Teepee Motel in Wharton as I stayed there 50 years ago as a kid and it was such an exciting experience. Now maybe my grandson can spend the weekend there.

Just thought someone might like to know that my dad built the Tee Pee courts located on old hwy 59 in Wharton Texas. His name was Frank Sablatura Sr. He was an independent contractor from Hungerford Texas. I was four years old at the time.

I was raised in Kendleton Texas just a few miles from the TEE PEE Motel. They always amazed me as to how to how they looked. Growing up I invisioned real Indians living there. Great to see them on the comeback.

This is so exciting. As a child, we would pass this town going to visit my Aunt and I always wanted to stay there. Just this past February, a friend of mine drove through Wharton to show me the "sights" and I almost fell over when I saw the TeePee's. It brought back fun memories - too bad my Dad passed and we won't be able to stay there, however, I look forward to taking my grandson for an overnight stay. Thanks for the memories. This is so COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a child my family made frequent road trips to Corpus to visit my grandparents. It was a trip highlight to watch for the "tee pee's". Many years later I realized I hadn't seen the tee pee's for a long time and my mother said, "Not since the 59 bypass was constructed." So, we took a drive through Wharton and there they were. We were sure someone would eventually buy the land and tear them down. So to hear the broadcast this morning about then being renovated and reoped was AWESOME and prompted a phonecall to my mother who too thinks this is great! THIS IS THE KIND OF NEWS WE LIKE TO HEAR! Thank you Johnathan for sharing/covering these stories/news!

How awesome to hear the news of the old TeePee Motel reopening!! I lived in Hungerford as a young child and have relatives in Wharton. We would passed them after they closed on our way to visit relatives or on the way to the BIG town of Wharton in the 60's. I always wanted to see the inside of them but never had the opportunity. It is so great that someone wanted to keep a part of the past instead of tearing them down for progress!!

Too cool! I have a picture out in front of that place, all grown over with grass! Me and my riding partner stopped on our Harley's--It was the kind of place we called a "Kodak Moment"!

I grew up in Wharton about sixty years ago. I always wanted to stay at the Tee Pee motel for
one night. Since the motel has been remodeled I will get a chance to stay at least a weekend. My parents are deceased, but we still have land down there. I remember when the Tee Pee's were red.

I grew up in Bay City and my parents actually spent their wedding night at the TeePee Motel.
Wonderful to see it coming back!

I remember as a small child, my grandparents would come from Brazoria to Wharton on Doctors' visits. It was always a treat to come over with them for a "grownup" lunch and to ride by the "TeePees" and hope to see Indians! I was so happy to see that they have survived all these years!

I am originally from Mississippi, but all my father's family live in Wharton. I used to come to Wharton every summer to visit them. My uncle, who now is deceased, told me that there was a movie filmed and they used the Tee-Pee hotel in some scenes. He even took me by and you could tell that they had recently been painted although the grounds were very overgrown. Does anyone know the name of the movie? He told me, but i have since forgotten. I thought it was the movie "Powder" with Micheal J. Fox as I know it was filmed on their in Wharton on the court house lawn.

I am so happy that the TeePee Motel has been revitalized. Zack Belcher whose parents owned the motel was a classmate of mine. The Zubichek girls whose mother worked there were also friends. A year or so ago we were in Wharton and stopped by the motel to take pictures and meet the new owner. He told us of his plans. Seeing the teepees was a part of "going to Grandma's" for my children. I am so glad to see something from my childhood so wonderfully restored

This rocks..Got into seeing tourist stuff from books this summer like Roadside Americana. Glad to see someone else getting in the spirit. There are so many things cool about our state and this is one more.Walton your pieces are great and informative to take the kids to see interesting stuff.. Keep em coming!

I also have fond childhood memeories of the hotel. My Grandparents have lived in New Gulf\Wharton all of my life. I have passed by there all of my life. I can remember that the seemingly never ending 3 hour drive as a kid always ended by pulling into Wharton and driving by the TeePee Motel. As soon as you saw the TeePees you knew the answer to the age old question, "Are we there yet?". There are a few things about Wharton that I will never forget besides my Grandparents and Family: Larry's Mexican Food, The Wharton Country Club golf course, and the TeePee Motel!

We spent this weekend (Nov 17 & 18) in number 102 TeePee. We enjoyed the stay and will return. Being old married people the bed was a little too small. She snores and I flip-flop. I highly recommend the place and especially like the shower stall. Thanks for opening the place. She and I have talked about staying there since the early 60s.

I have studied the tipi and wigwom. The Motel tends to make me think that all the people who stay there, must just be a little two tent's LOL.
