Tortured dog in North Texas dies of injuries

tortdog.jpgWatch the video here

A puppy who was doused with gasoline, set on fire and left to die on Good Friday has succumbed to her injuries.

Two men found "Mercy" 10 days ago in a wooded area behind the Rock Creek Apartments in Far North Dallas. While the 10-month-old pit bull mix received expert care at the Operation Kindness shelter, veterinarians said her injuries were too severe to survive.

Mercy was burned over 60 percent of her body. Her ears had to be amputated.

There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for torturing and ultimately killing Mercy.

You'll find more pictures and information on a memorial service for Mercy on Operation Kindness' website here.

I FIRMLY believe that ANY individual causing ANY mental, psychological, physical, &/or spiritual harm/trauma to another being who DOES NOT KNOW WHY, or DOES NOT UNDERSTAND/UNABLE TO FIGHT BACK, should receive payment in the way in which he/she dealt out the pain....BLOW BY BLOW, in the EXACT SAME format...those persons out there who even THINK that this sort of thing is funny, doesn't MATTER, it's just a DOG, well, let's see if that song's still being sung when a BIC lighter is being held up to your ear while a sharp object jabs you from your ribs to your stomach....funny, isn't it?!

Has anyone heard what the latest update on the case of this human piece of garbage is? Did the judge who lowered his bail hug him and send him on his merry way?
Too bad there isn't an Eye for an Eye judge in Texas!
Wonder what this judge who dropped his bail to 2500 which means $250 gets him a walk will do when the b****d kills a child? Guess he'll cry crocodile tears for the press.

I am a reporter who'se seen too much of prosecutors who won't prosecute animal abusers, judges who won't convict, and animal abusers who beat, starve, burn, cut, torture with impunity. The laws are there;let's push the officials to enforce them. Publish the names of any and all officials who let these future serial killers off with a hug and a wrist slap. The only thing politicians fear -- and never doubt that judges are politicians - is visibility.

Animals are "thinking," "feeling," and "experiencing" beings. They have basic rights because they have the capacity to suffer. We have a duty to protect those rights.
====================================
He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.(~Author Unknown~)
====================================
If we are God's children, we should also care about them and celebrate life without contributing to the suffering and death of God's creatures.
=====================================
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. (www.Pet-Abuse.com)
=====================================
"Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures." (~Albert Einstein~)
=====================================
" The Animals' Savior "
I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of human society.
I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal.
And I was angry.
"God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?"
God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly.
"I have done something," He replied.
"I created you."
====================================
I DON'T UNDERSTAND
(Please feel free to copy and pass along. )

I don't understand how they could have forgotten. Forgotten that I am a noble animal, descended from the first wolf that made a pact with man thousands of years ago. We have since freely lived with and helped man with any endeavor he has asked of us.

In the beginning we helped him hunt and protected him at night. We would search out game and help him catch it then gladly accept the scraps. We have gone into burrows and fought tenacious animals with razor teeth because he asked us to.

We helped him domesticate and herd other animals so that he would not have to work so hard at hunting. Alert and vigilant always we protect the herd from predators and keep it calm and safe during storms and blizzards, while he is warm and sleeping in his home. And no matter how hungry we get we would never touch our charges, for he has entrusted us with them.

We have used our keen sense of smell to help him find his lost friends and children. We have gone into disasters where it was dangerous to go because we were the only ones capable of finding the people buried there in time to save them. We have searched out drugs, explosives, and contraband for hours at a time and only asked for some attention in return.

We have learned to assist humans that can not do everything for themselves. We will guide with the utmost care those who do not see, we open doors, turn on lights, pick things up for people that can?t. We alert people that can't hear to the sounds around them. At times we work for days on end without time to just be a dog but we never complain because we know we are helping.

We bring joy to those in hospitals and retirement homes when we visit. Even when we have tired we will continue on because we know the joy and comfort we bring to these people.

We learn all types of commands so that we can attend shows and demonstrate the skills we have learned. We do obedience trials, agility matches, schutzhund, and conformation shows. We willingly put up with hours of training and grooming even enduring haircuts that are less than dignified, all to please him.

We have died for him, protecting his home, protecting his community, and fighting his wars. We have even died fighting our own kind because he wanted us to. We having willingly done this because he is our master and we have put our trust in him.

Now as I sit here in this cage, with hundreds of others, facing death, I try to understand. I had a home with a family, but they say I grew too big and shed too much. They said I was too hyper and played too rough.

They have forgotten that we protected them from the dark when they were frightened, that we caught food for them when they were hungry, that we adapted to any thing they wanted of us to help them and have them keep us in their hearts.

No one ever showed me what they wanted of me or I would have tried with all my heart to please them, to adapt to that which they needed, for I did not want to be one of the thousands and thousands of dogs who are not wanted and have no place to go and passively go to be put to death because the master has forgotten, forgotten that we are noble animals.

I don't understand..........

Hello, my name is Steven. I'm from New Orleans, LA, and evacuated to Irving, TX in early September. I Bought "Mercy" in mid September upon movin in Presidio Park(North Texas). She was born early July 05. Jazzy was a Crenshaw red nose pitbull, peanut butter coat, hazel eyes, two back paws were white, tail nor ears were not clipped. I still have a few pics of her when she was 4-6 months. After Presidio Park went back on they're Katrina Victim pet deposit waiver, they gave me 24 hrs to get rid of my pup or pay 300$ immediately. Me being in the financial situation I was in, I sold her to a what looked to be a 'happy home' type of family that also was from New Orleans. I can't press charges w/o paper work on her, because I baught her from an add in Dallas Morning News for a cheap price because of the papers not being available. If you have any advice, please e-mail me so I can give you my number. I still have the contact information for 'Jazzy' formerly known as 'Mercy's Parents. I raised that dog since she was 11-12 weeks of age. I miss her, and I wish I never would have let her go. She never bothered anyone and always was willing to play.. She only barked if you left her site.

A biography of our president, George W. Bush, notes that he has boasted about torturing animals in his youth -- blowing up toads with firecrackers, dissecting cats alive. This explains a great deal about his callous approach to death-row inmates and to the perpetration of the senseless war in Iraq. Where is the outrage about him?

This guy is absolutley, positively a piece of garbage. Let me have 5 minutes alone with this guy and he will know what pain really is. I can't imagine anybody doing this to a defenseless dog. A person who is capable of doing this to an innocent animal is capable of doing far much worse. He needs to be caught and locked away. Hearing stuff like this really pisses me off and makes me ashamed to be in the same specicies with this guy. Like I said, please God just give me 5 minutes alone with Mr. Brown that's all I ask.

   --Posted by: Robert Riddle at May 8, 2006 1:22 PM

Words cannot describe the pain I feel everytime I read about Mercy. How an innocent and precious creation of God can be tortured so horribly is beyond my wildest imagination. May the person who did this rot in hell for eternity!!! At least Mercy feels no more pain now. God bless her!

Do you think there is enough of us that want "justice" done to get together and make it happen since obviously this sick future serial killer just got a little slap on the hand? Why can't everybody join together and get "something" done....more than a slap....he really deserves to be tortured as he tortured Mercy. I hope somebody runs across this piece of scum. Does anybody know how to get in touch with this guy. I really hope "somebody" puts his light out for good. I can't so upset still can't get over it! He is free now? What can we do? I'm willing...Mary

Deshawn Brown, the killer of this innocent puppy, has no social value whatsoever, and is furthermore, a constant and future threat to society, and should be removed from the planet, unceremoniously. Brown is a future seriel killer walking in our midst. Our children are not sfae with him in the world.

So yea, this is horrible. Actually that word does not do it justice. We came together not just as a community, but as a state. We felt the quakes of what is wrong, and we acted. We found this poor puppies attacker. I just hope if we can see the obvious Wrong -in this world of RIGHT AND WRONG- of what happend to this dog, that we can see it in cases of five babies, five human children being drown. Maybe one poor baby having her arms cut off name of god. How about up north when poor miss pre-teen america was killed? i felt for this dog, i felt like crying everytime i heard this story. I replayed the pictures of her in my head always. I questioned who would do this? Why make that question? Look at what happens way to often. WAY TO OFTEN WITHOUT PUNISHMENT! So i am not shocked, just sickened. Not just by Deshawn, but by myself, you, the media, the figure heads of stardom, and society. STOP LETTING THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE OUT TO HURT UNJUSTLY OFF WITH OUT SO MUCH AS A SLAP ON THE WRIST. Thats truely depressing.

He should go to prison for the rest of his life. He is a useless waste of oxygen and obviously has no capacity to contribute anything productive or of meaning to the world. Let us not forget that people who abuse and kill animals rarely stop there. The names Dennis Raider (BTK Killer), Jeffery Dahmer, and Albert DeSalvo (The Boston Strangler) all tortured and killed animals before they committed their crimes against humans.

This is the most heart wrenching story of animal abuse. Mercy;s beauty and strength will precvail. Please share her story so we can prevent this in the future.

Thanks for providing info on the campaign against Deshawn Brown. I encourage everyone to take as much action as needed to get Deshawn executed to the furthest extent of the law. Deshawn is a disgusting excuse for a man and justice will find him.

Love you Mercy!

I would like to thank all the law enforcement and animal services officers who worked hard to find and arrest DeShawn Brown. As well as the staff at Operation Kindness and at Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center for their treatment of Mercy. It is comforting to know that she knew unconditional love and kindness in her last days.

It breaks my heart to think that all the work of the animal services, law enforcement, doctors, techs, staff and animal lovers were betrayed by the actions of a judge or magistrate who determined that Brown need only pay $250 to get out of jail. This was a slap in the face to all who knew Mercy's story and care about animals, especially the injured.

Whoever this judge or magistrate is, should be recalled from the bench. They do not care enough for the citizenry of their community to keep a dangerous felon in jail.

   --Posted by: Patricia at April 29, 2006 2:40 PM

I believe "an eye for an eye" punishment for the 21 year old idiot who ultimately killed Mercy. I hope that it is not true that he was released for a mere $250 - what message does this send? We need to have an animal cruelty database that is public record similar to what is already in place for sex offenders.

Mercy is in a much better place now

   --Posted by: Linda Tailford at April 29, 2006 7:38 AM

Bail dropped to $2,500. How pathetic. Had it been a person dragged, stabbed, burned, and left to die in the woods - I guarantee that person would not be out on bail - he'd be sitting on capital murder charges. Mercy died in agony only to have her murderer walk out of jail after paying about $250. Where is her justice?

   --Posted by: Annette at April 28, 2006 4:37 PM

My heart goes out to Mercy. I wish i could have done more to help. I gave my trust to the officers attending this matter, if i would have known that mercy would have been left to die, i would have taken her in myself, maybe she would have had a chance, but as we all know we cant live on what ifs, what is done is done, and may the LORD, have MERCY! on Dehann Browns poor soul. You will get what you deserve.

   --Posted by: will at April 28, 2006 1:38 PM

The b*stard that did this to this dog is now out on bail. I guarantee he won't show up for his court date. So everyone in Dallas, keep your eyes open for Deshann Brown. I know if I see him, I will make sure he knows who I am. His mother should be ashamed to have a son like him. He is a worthless waste of skin and he deserves to rot in hell. I hope he dies a slow and painful death.

   --Posted by: Stacey at April 28, 2006 12:51 PM

I knew this little puppy.I watched grow up on the balcony where she lived up until the night she died.Her name was Brandy.The person arrestedfor,and did this,had his bail dropped from $50,000.00 to only $2,500.00,which means he got out of jail for only $250.00.Does this bother anyone?It sure as hell bothers me.

   --Posted by: joe at April 28, 2006 3:43 AM

As a former resident of Dallas, I know about the wonderful work that Operation Kindness does for the pets and people in the Dallas area.

My heart is broken over this sad and senseless situation, but I know this dog is in heaven and will never be hurt or maimed again.

This horrible excuse for a human being should have the same thing done to him, that he did to this poor, defenseless puppy.

God has a special place reserved in hell for thugs who harm others. It was so needless to hurt this dog. He must stay in jail for a few years and find out what torment is all about.

Another website that ran this story stated that both the Dallas Animal Services Department and the Dallas Police Department are investigating this incident. Animals that have been abused show up at the City of Houston Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care ALL THE TIME. No effort is made to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice. I witnessed an incident where a dog that had been shot was brought to BARC by two HPD officers. The poor dog was still alive, but couldn't stand up. The officers said they would have shot it where they found it to put it out of its pain but there were childern around. It is well known that our elected officials don't care about animals. When someone is shooting stray animals around childern, I think it's time for them to start.

May those people that did that to that sweet dog rot in Hell! There is no excuse whatso ever to abuse any animal. My heart hurts after reading that story.
