In case you didn't get to the comments section of the post (
here) about Honor, the missing Greyhound, it has come to a sad ending: Diana, a volunteer, had been searching and left this comment around 4:30 Saturday afternoon:
"Lisa, I am so very sad to tell you and your readers that my friend and I found Honor this afternoon after looking for 8 hours. She had been hit by a car and died probably sometime on Thursday, near as we can tell. Honor died not die a quick death; I will not get into the terrible details, but I will say that her death was slow and horrible.
When, as a society, will we begin to value the life of an animal? The man who dumped her had so many options if he felt he could not care for this dog. She was not aggresive or hard to handle. He just did not care enough to do the right thing by this girl and decided that dumping a beautiful, precious animal was just fine. This should not ever be an option, and if our legal system gave harsher punishments to these people maybe it would make a difference. It is too late for Honor, but let's not let her death be in vain. By dumping her he signed her death sentence and he should have to answer for what he did."
My deepest sympathies go out to Honor's owner and the good souls who looked for, and eventually found her. Thanks, as well, to all of you who sent out prayers and good thoughts.

It is truley heart breaking to hear something so inhuman like this. The owner needs to pay for what he has done to this poor helpless animal. People like this are a danger to the human race and to the beautiful animals that exist on our planet and they have a right as much as us to live and be loved. I hope the law takes punishes him the way he made beautiful Honor suffer, only then he will know how it feels and how poor honor suffered. You and precious Honor will always be in my prayers and I am sure he is in doggy heaven with a lot of love and pain free.

This is very sad. I can't believe the owner didn't take Honor to a rescue. Their isn't any reason for this dog to die such an awful death. SHAME ON YOU!!!

I am so sorry about Honor, it makes me sick. Please know that Honor is in heaven now, not in pain with loving arms around her. There are many animal lovers on this earth. God will take care of the actions of the cruel people in this world. You & sweet Honor are in my prayers.

I truly feel sorry for the owner. I don't think I would be able to forgive my father for killing my dog. Their are so many options out there all he had to do was pick up the phone for help. Instead he choose to abandon his daughter's dog which is heartless to the dog and especially to his own daughter. Even if he didn't like the dog you would think he would have more respect for his own daughter. Honor and the owner you are in my thoughts. I am so sorry for Honor's death.

Lisa, I hope you realized that I was only joking this morning when I said that I told those two women who asked who you were, I said "No one". They were surprised and impressed that someone like you would take time out to support the runners. I told them, "That's what real runners do." I apologise if I offended you.

I was so sorry to read about Honor's death. It makes me sick to think that people can be so cruel to animals. It is disgusting to think about the man who put Honor out and the one who ran her over and did not stop to take her to a vet.

I just found this on the THLN site: Obviously there ARE laws addressing pet abandonment in TX, and these lovely folks should be prosecuted to the fullest!
Q: Are there any laws in Texas which prohibit and punish people who abandon their animal(s)?
A: In Texas it is a state jail felony to ?abandon unreasonably an animal in the person?s custody?. (See Section 42.09 of the Texas Penal Code at http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/pe.toc.htm). This crime is punishable by a minimum of 180 days in jail and a maximum of 2 years. There can also be a fine up to $10,000. You need to contact the local law enforcement agency (city: police dept. or county: the sheriff's office) immediately, in addition to the local humane organization.
