Who needs animal abusers when you have this..

People who work in shelters who are doing just that? I still can't believe this story we're doing on 11 News at 5 today:

One of the public works supervisors in Jourdanton, Texas (about 40 miles southwest of San Antonio) is in trouble for ordering city employees to drown six stray dogs at the city sewer plant.

Yes, read that again: DROWNED IN THE CITY SEWER PLANT.

It gets worse: the supervisor, Chantan Morin, apparently did it to save money.

The animals were dropped, inside their cages, into the water and drowned. The city manager says this is just a freak incident and a one time bad decision. The only reason we know about this is because a young man doing community service saw it happen, and felt bad enough about it to tell someone.

As punishment, Chantan Morin will have to attend classes with animal control. The city says it's drafting a policy to prevent future incidents.

That is just sad and heartless. Drowning a helpless dog just to "save money" is just downright disgusting. I hope this guy learns a thing or to a rehabilitation!

In response to the attack on the SPCA:

Lost or stray animals get 3 weeks, not 3 days at the SPCA in the hopes that the owner will come for them. At that time, they are evaluated and if they are adoptable put up for adoption. All animals are looked over by vetinary staff when admitted to the SPCA in case of life threatening illnesses or injuries that require immediate care. The SPCA is a companion animal shelter. The reason that animals with life threatening issues or serious medical problems aren't cleared for adoption is because people complain about getting an animal that's not in 'tip-top' shape. Not to mention that the reason that not all the animals with illnesses can be treated is that the SPCA simply does not have the resources to do so. Euthanasia isn't a pleasant thing, and something that every animal lover wishes wasn't neccessary, but unfortunately, with the problem of animal overpopulation, lack of education in the public, and many other reasons, it is a neccessary evil. The SPCA accepts EVERY animal that is brought in. Go by on a Saturday and see what this entails. From birds, hamsters, rabbits, multiple litters of kittens and puppies, to full grown animals that people just didn't have time for. Not to mention exotic animals, farm animals, various wildlife, and the horrible cruelty cases. Many of the no-kill shelters only take certain animals and only if they have enough space. The SPCA has found thousands of animals homes and rehabilitated just as many abused or mistreated animals. The majority of their staff is made up of volunteers. If you have a problem with animal abuse or shelters not doing enough, maybe you should stop complaining about things you don't have all the facts about and start helping out. Whether by monetary donations or by donating your time. Not to mention maybe you should try to round up the animals you seem so despondant over in you neighborhood or call one of the rescue shelters to come get them. If you want more information on how to help, visit the SPCA site: http://www.spcahouston.org/SPCAHouston/Who_We_Are.asp?SnID=148820388 it also has information about the 35,000 animals it took in last year.

I agree with all your comments...I think this man's name must be Chantan MORON....which also seems an overly genrous estimation of Daniel Nick's intelligence. The dogs had been in the "shelter" for days....why did they suddenly have to yank them out and MURDER them...Nick would have us believe it was because they were "gravely ill with bleeding tumors and mange." How does he know? Is he a vet? Did a vet see the dogs at any time...and if so....if they were so ill...why were they not humamely put to sleep rather than being brutally anc cruelly killed?

They must have taken all email address off of their website, because I can't find any. The number for City Hall is 830-769-3589. The supervisor and workers should be fired at a minimum!

"One can measure the greatness and the moral progress of a nation by looking at how it treats her animals." Mahatma Ghandi
Harsher laws should be made and enforced to punish those who commit heinous acts like these!
Try calling these numbers to complain:
Jourdanton Chief of Police Ronnie Lawson:
(830)769-2241
Atascosa District Attorney Rene Pena:
(830) 393-3000

Tara - I don't have the numbers, but I'm sure you'd be able to find something on the Jourdanton website. It's linked to in the post.

Our society here in Texas just isn't educated enough or tolerant enough to attempt to help save lost animals. With the guise that the SPCA, CAP and other animal protection agencies actually try to help strays find a home, most are put down unless the animal is in tip top shape. Who knows of a lost animal that is in tip top shape when found. Three days for the owner to find them or they are put down. That's plenty of time right, WRONG! Just like the woman outside of San Antonio who killed the dogs to save money at the waste water plant, the SPCA and CAP do the same thing, just not in the same cruel and uncaring fashion. I'm sick of seeing dogs in the back of pick up trucks or wandering my street with no one doing anything to help prevent possible death of a pet or finding a lost animal a home. Who wants to help when putting an animal up for adoption when it takes almost two months for any veternarian to review an animal just to get placed in an adoption viewing program. With limited resources going to the SPCA or CAP, and not the no-kill animal facilities, these cruel acts of animal care or lack there of will unfortunately continue here in Texas. The money that goes to the SPCA or CAP pays more for euthenasia than even the shelter expenses, you tell me if this is a preventative measure against animal abuse.
