Celebrate Halloween Saturday at BARC's Fall Festival!

Looking for something safe and fun to do with the kids on Halloween? Come to BARC for its first ever Fall Festival on Saturday from Noon to 4:00 pm. Enjoy games, entertainment and free food. Plus, all adoptions are half-price! (No costumes, though, because we don't want to scare the animals.) Spend the day at BARC and still have time for trick-or-treating after dark. Adopt a homeless animal and give them a treat, too!

And now, the horrifying tale of black dog syndrome...
In animal shelters all over the country there is truth so terrible it may shock you: big black dogs are the hardest to adopt and most frequently euthanized. Why? No one is certain, but theories range from superstition to visibility. Throughout history, evil has been represented by snarling black dogs, but black dogs may also just be harder to see in dimly lit kennels. Black dogs are also harder to photograph. This week's BARC STARZ presents a few of BARC's beautiful black dogs. We hope you will seek them out and consider adding one to your home.

SWEETIE - THIS SWEET THING WON'T RUIN YOUR DIET. Over the years researchers have studied the impressions names make. Consciously or unconsciously, people associate stereotypes with certain names. This is a perfect example. As her name suggests, SWEETIE is a charming little girl that's a little bit shy. Her sad eyes looking at you from her kennel just beg for you to take her out and give her a hug. SWEETIE also has a frisky side where she hops and sprints hoping you'll come and play. SWEETIE is 2 years old, about 50 pounds and heartworm negative. Adopt SWEETIE and make every day sweet at your house! Look for SWEETIE at BARC in South D Ward, I.D. number A1000191.

DONNA! Have you ever tried taking a picture of a cat? It ain't easy. For example, DONNA has the most beautiful orange eyes but she would not look at the camera! To be fair, DONNA is a little nervous. She is new to the free roaming room and she is still trying to get used to things. After all, she's been alone in a small metal cage since summer. One thing that's sure to catch DONNA'S eye, however, is the ball with the bell in it. She loves that toy! She's a very playful little girl and quick to jump on anything that moves. She looks and acts like a kitten even though she is 3 years old. You'll just have to come to BARC to see those gorgeous eyes for yourself. Look for DONNA at BARC in the open adoption room in the North Building, ID number A0997386.

Meet this week's BARC STARZ!

HAPPY TAILS...LOTS OF GOOD ADOPTIONS THIS WEEK!

HERSHEY the chocolate Lab mix is safe in a good home tonight! We sent out a special plea for HERSHEY in last week's email and we are so glad someone special came to save him.

Volunteer and staff favorite MAGNUS the chatty black and white cat went to a great home. His new mom (who also adopted another cat) promises MAGNUS will be spoiled!

Two of our BARC Starz were adopted at last week's WAGS TO WHISKERS: EMMA the pretty tortie cat and GUS the big black and white cat.

Lovely calico ABIGAIL was also adopted this week. Congratulations to all the BARC animals that are safe and snug in their new homes!
