The Bureau of Land Management ended its controversial wild horse roundup in the Pryor Mountains on Wednesday, seven days after it started, and began releasing the captured animals back onto the 38,000-acre range. Of an estimated 188 horses in the mountains 70 miles south of Billings, 146 were rounded up in corrals at BLM's Britton Springs, Wyo., facility. Of those gathered, the BLM will put 57 up for adoption, three of them mares with foals. The Cloud Foundation says that the BLM released Cloud and his band first. It was a relief to see them finally disappear into the rolling lowland hills and start the long journey back up to their mountaintop. One foal was featured in a YouTube video posted Wednesday by The Cloud Foundation, a horse advocacy group. The video showed a sore-footed foal gingerly walking in a corral. The group's founder, Ginger Kathrens, said the young animal was hazed by helicopter from the top of the Pryor Mountains about 10 miles to the corrals. She called the roundup "madness on the mountain" and encouraged followers to call President Obama to protest. Read more from The Cloud Foundation.
