The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), in conjunction with the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake and the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department, rescued more than 500 dogs and approximately 15 cats from deplorable conditions at a Kaufman County puppy mill.
"This day marks a new beginning for these animals, who are suffering from a variety of serious health conditions and have been kept in constant confinement their entire lives producing puppies for the profit of the mill owner," said Scotlund Haisley, senior director of Emergency Services at The HSUS. "We applaud the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department for taking a stand against this abusive behavior, and allowing us to come in and rescue more than 500 animals." The Investigation The investigation began when a call for help came in to the Wilde Puppy Mill Task Force just last week. Task force manager Justin Scally immediately began to work the case. The HSUS conducted a joint investigation with the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake, which resulted in the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department's initiating its own investigation and obtaining a a search warrant in this case. Volunteers from United Animal Nations are on hand to assist with the temporary shelter for the rescued animals. Much-needed supplies were provided by PetSmart Charities®, which sent its Emergency Relief Waggin'® full of donated goods such as wire crates, dog food and bedding. A Disturbing Scene When rescuers arrived at the property, they encountered a disturbing scene. The dogs are mainly small breeds such as poodles and Chihuahuas. These neglected animals were housed in filthy conditions and exposed to the harsh elements all year round. Many of the dogs are severely matted and suffering from chronic infected wounds, internal and external parasites and serious skin and eye infections. It is obvious that many of these animals had never known life outside their wire cages. All of the animals are being swiftly removed and transported to a nearby emergency shelter set up specifically for this rescue mission. After arriving at the shelter, the dogs and cats will be checked by a team of veterinarians and given any necessary immediate medical care. The Kaufman County Sheriff's Department is providing 24-hour security at the emergency shelter to ensure the safety of the rescued animals. This operation is made possible in part from funding provided to The HSUS by the Kenneth and Lillian Wilde Foundation, who created the Wilde Puppy Mill Task Force to rescue animals from abusive puppy mills. Rather than slap the wrists of these people who ILLEGALLY, INHUMANELY, CRUELLY, COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLLY profit off situations such as this, the people (if you want to call them that) should have all their assets confiscated the same way they do drub dealers. Then they should be thrown in jail without visitors for 7 years for each year of those dogs life.
Thank you to those who rescued these dogs and please keep us updated on the outcome of this case.

These human scum should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is unthinkable to make money from the suffering of any creature. I sincerely hope that each of these animals finds a loving forever home. I also whole heartedly applaud PetSmart for helping through there charitable organization. If I didn't already shop there, I would now. Kudos to the Sherrif's office of Kaufman county and to the members of the anti-puppy mill task force.
please get us information on who we can contact to adopt these animals
This is absolutely terrible! These people need to be thrown in jail and not let out. I will rescue one dog. Wish I could rescue more. PetSmart has really stepped up to the plate, way to go! This is where I will continue to spend and donate my money:o)
Thanks you Petsmart for steeping up . I shop their a lot. Can something be done like prison time for the owner and buyers of puppy mill puppies? I would like to help maybe adopting or giving a donation or volunteer a few hours a day.
While the puppy mills flourish, the dogs and cats suffer, and our law makers are looking for votes!!!
Learned about this story through the TXCN channel and was disgusted by the living conditions that these poor dogs were exposed to. The owners should face prison time for each of the abused dogs. Thanks PetSmart for helping these dogs out. Family of 5, just bought a home with a nice fenced yard and are in the possibility of providing a loving home for one or two small dogs.
Everyone asking what you can do to help - the fastest, easiest and BEST way to help is to PREVENT EVERYONE YOU KNOW FROM BUYING OETS FROM PET STORES. Pet Stores, like Petland, and others across the country get their "products" from puppy mills! Saving a dog or puppy from a reliable shelter or rescue group is best, but there are also trustworthy breeders who are professional and who raise healthy animals. JUST DO YOUR RESEARCH and encourage everyone you know to do the same! I have a rescue organization and I cannot believe the number of healthy, beautiful, smart, lovable PUPPIES and DOGS, full bred and mixed, that will be euthanized or be lobely in shelters because of slimy overbreeding greedy scumbags like puppy-mill owners. Donating money to the HSUS and Petsmart charities is awesome BUT educating yourselves, your kids, your family and friends is FREE - go spread the word - RESCUE a new family member!
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
