Oprah's Puppy Dies from Parvo

One of the puppies Oprah Winfrey recently adopted from a Chicago rescue has died from parvo and the other one is being treated for the disease.

"We were hoping and praying, but knew it was possible that he would not make it," one source told Zootoo Pet News.

"One of Oprah Winfrey's recently adopted Cocker Spaniel puppies, Ivan, has died from Parvovirus, a contagious disease that affects only canines," Winfrey's spokeswoman confirmed to Zootoo Pet News.

Her other puppy, Sadie, is now fighting to overcome the same disease.

"I'm saddened by his [Ivan's] passing, though we only had him for a weekend," Winfrey said in a statement released directly to ZT Pet News. "I remain hopeful that Sadie will pull through."

As of Wednesday afternoon, Sadie has stabilized for the first time since she entered a Chicago animal hospital on Thursday.

"Her white blood cell count did not drop overnight and she is holding her own," Winfrey's spokeswoman said of Sadie.

But Winfrey is aware that the dog's 24-7 veterinary care might not be enough to see her through, according to Shelly Rubin, DVM, Winfrey's vet of the past 15 years.

"Everyone is working really hard to save that little dog," said Rubin, of Blum Animal Hospital in Chicago. "It's a deadly disease -- a bad, bad disease."

Winfrey adopted both 11-week-old Ivan and Sadie from Pets Are Worth Saving, a no-kill humane organization in Chicago, several weeks ago. The media mogul debuted Sadie, along with her three brothers, on her daytime TV show March 6; Winfrey then decided to adopt one of the other puppies, Ivan, on-air.

Ivan became ill with vomiting diarrhea mid-last week. One of Winfrey's veterinarians, Barbara Royal, contacted Jean Dodds, DVM, founder of Hemopet, the only animal blood bank in the country, on Wednesday evening.

Yet the blood transplant apparently came too late for Ivan, who was treated at a Chicago animal hospital on Thursday.

"They approached me when they knew these puppies were very sick and wanted to consider the possibility of providing antibodies," Dodds said. "The difficulty was Ivan was too sick. He had already become extremely sick. We were hoping and praying, but knew it was possible that he would not make it."

Ivan died over the weekend.

The focus has now turned to Ivan's sister, Sadie, who is undergoing treatment at an emergency veterinary clinic for the same disease.

"She is getting the best possible care and we are hoping for the best," Royal said.

In light of the tragic events, Winfrey is "doing really well," according to Blum, who speaks to her "every day."

How very sad for everyone! RIP little Ivan - you were loved and you will be missed! Stay strong and fight little Sadie - we are all praying for you to live and have a wonderful life! Oprah - we are praying for you too!!
I personally know how sick puppies can get from parvo! I am fostering 2 puppies that were recently rescued from the area in Houston along I59 known as The Corridor of Cruelty (called this due to all the abandoned dogs that suffer in that area) and they both came down with parvo a few days after I brought them home! I am very happy and thankful to say that both Jessie and Josie are now parvo survivors! I hope we can say the same for little Sadie in the near future!

my son and daughterinlaw adopted a pup from a shelter that came down with parvo...they had vaccinated him but he had already been exposed. They called the shelter and they said they could bring him back and get another dog. Well, we hand fed him baby food and boiled rice and ground meat, kept him hydrated, and he grew to be a huge lap dog that is always smiling, ready to play and loves tummy rubs...I hope Sadie has a full recovery...maybe shelters should vaccinate for parvo earlier than they do....

Did she get the puppies vaccinated? Often people don't out of a very mistaken belief that their puppies aren't susceptible. Parvo is an easily prevented illness with signs of vomiting, lethargy, anorexia and diarrhea - often hemorrhagic. Surivial with hospitalization and appropriate care is 80-85%.

Thanks for your comment, Animal Lover.
Would you be interested in talking with us about your puppy if we do a story about parvo?

Sounds like he got the best care he could.I wish more people would adopt, instead of buy, or breed just for the sake of breeding. The media has been playing this as though she did something wrong, just to get u to watch their news (ET)

So sorry to hear this, I had a dog die of this as well. Bless the puppy in heaven... :-(

If the puppy came from a rescue then it was vaccinated before it was adopted. It is possible that it got parvo before it was vaccinated or it got parvo from the vaccine. I had a puppy with parvo too. He had supposidly been vaccinated when we got him. We thought it was so cute he was falling asleep with is head in the food bowl. Fortunately our neighbor across the street was a vet tech and told us that that wasn't normal...so we had him checked out. He got really sick and was at the vets for several days, but he eventually got better and lived to be 14. It sounds like Oprah's other pup is doing better...which is great news!

May the poor puppy rest in peace. It has gone to a better place than being forced to live with Oprah.

Why is this even considered news?

A better place than living with Oprah? How insensitve and stupid can you be. Who wouldn't want to live the spoiled life of Oprah's dogs. Her dogs have no worries, they live in her home, probably sleep in her bed and never have to go hungry or worry about being abused.

Dear Oprah, I'm very sorry for your loss. Thank you for adopting from a shelter. Hopefully this won't ruin your adoption experience. This could have happened to anyone no matter where the puppy came from.

Best wishes for Sadie's full recovery.

Wow I don't know how I miss this one, but it's a tough lesson one must learn before they get it right. You should now have learned that all shelters are full of diseases. And buying a puppy from one is not a good idea at all. You could have saved yourself a lot of heartache if you would have brought your puppy from a reputable breeder. Shelters are quick to point the finger at breeders for selling dogs, when the only finger they should be pointing at is themselves.
