Five Brown Pelicans injured in Hurricane Ike were released back into the wild yesterday.
The Wildlife Rehab and Education Center released five brown pelicans into the wild Monday after Hurricane Ike left them oiled and injured in Galveston. Brown pelicans are considered an endangered species. Since they were found, the birds have undergone extensive rehabilitation at the center. Executive Director Sharon Schmalz said she is confident the pelicans were ready to be reintroduced into their natural habitat.
