WILD ANIMALS SUFFERED TOO

The Wildlife Rehab & Education Wildlife Care Center is preparing for an influx of wild animal victims of Hurricane Ike.

Wildlife Rehab & Education Executive Director Sharon Schmalz said that Ike's high winds and heavy rain blew baby squirrels from their nests, knocked roosting birds out of trees and literally slammed coastal birds like pelicans and seagulls to the ground.

She urges anyone finding an orphaned baby squirrel or bird to put him/ her in a box with a rag. Do not offer food or water. Residents finding injured or orphaned seabirds should gently toss a towel over the animal and carefully sweep them in a box. The most important thing at this point is to get the animal warm and dry.

Please call the Houston SPCA Disaster Hotline for rescue information at 877-661-0161 or 713-861-0161.

Watching your video on the rescue of squirrels made me sick. Squirrels are RODENTS. Would you rescue and bottle feed rats? When there are PEOPLE desperately in need of help of all kinds? There is something wrong with people who address the hurricane related problems by trying to save the lives of rodents, which can and always have survived very well, thank you. That's why they are such a menace in our yards and bird feeders.I have had squirrels chew through window frames and go down a chimney to get into a house, after which they were difficult to remove. What misplaced sympathy!!! Why do you think squirrels are so smart? Because the fittest of them have survived all these centuries. They still can and will.

I am glad you have support for wild animals they are part of what makes Houston great - our wildlife should be protected from all the elements if we can. Just ignore the negative comments from the misinformed.
I do not want to live in a place where people ignore dand leave animals for dead on the side of the road or whatever they're thinking - that's gross. We are not in an uneducated society here where there's no dental care or cars. We can help people AND animals. Get informed

J Sporia shame on you!
For gripping at those who show compassion for ALL(man and beast), who's lives have been turned upside down.. I for one enjoy the squirrels and their antics. They are the clowns of the garden.

My heart and prayers goes out to all who have been effected by the recent hurricanes. All the islands and the USA. Besides the aid being provided for people.

I am thankful for all the work the ASPA and the wildlife care center's do to help ease the suffering of God's creatures great and small..
