We don't like Ike!

Two down...one to go. Forecasts show Ike crossing Cuba and skirting Key West by Tuesday on a trek to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, slowly strengthening to perhaps a Category 3 storm. Plan now.

The Harris County Disaster Animal Management Task Force recommends that all pet owners take these precautions:

All animals should be current on their inoculations. Check with your veterinarian to see if your pets are current on their vaccinations and update them if needed.

All animals should be wearing current identification tags and microchips

Each pet owner should have a disaster plan that includes your pets. If your plans include evacuating with your pets you will need traveling supplies. If you would shelter in place, plan for keeping your pets indoors during the storm.

Some items that you will need to include in your disaster kit are:

  • Pet Food and water (one gallon water per pet/per day) for 5 days and bowls
  • Crates for small animals, leashes & muzzles (required for public transport) for larger dogs
  • Cat litter and litter box (that fits inside the cat carrier)
  • Sheet or towel for inside the carrier
  • Paper towels, trash bags, newspaper, and hand sanitizers.
  • Pet first aid kit
  • Pet comfort items such as toys or chew bones
  • Sealed plastic bag with: complete medical records, current photos of your pets (preferably with you in the photo), your information and phone number, and alternate phone numbers and alternate care-takers, be sure to include the name and number of someone who lives outside of the potential disaster area, and the name and phone number of your veterinarian.

Livestock pastures should be cleared of debris that may become airborne in a storm. Check fencing and buildings for needed repairs. Waterproof bags with your contact information should be posted on each entrance gate.

Everybody be prepared and be safe! Don't leave your pets behind like my idiot neighbors did! They left one of their dogs behind without food, water, or shelter. Had Gustave been as bad as we thought in my area, that poor fella would have been S.O.L! (He was so freaked out, he wouldn't come to me. So I just left water & food twice daily for him, and tried to talk sweet and gently to him to calm him.) We watched and waited, then ended up not evacuating...but we were packed and ready to go! I fed and watered that poor baby that whole weekend. And yes, I reported them! That's not right to leave an animal behind! There are plenty of shelters that now allow pets. I'm afraid that they will do it again if Ike comes here. That just breaks my heart! (Especially since I had NO room for him because of my big crew! Plus he was just too scared to come to me.) PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't leave your pets behind! I know it's not always easy to do...I have a large crew that I have to take, and I take every last one...but they can't fend for themselves easily and there's no telling how long you might be out of your home and be able to get back for them! It was 2 weeks before we were able to get back to our home! One week you couldn't even get in the county, the 2nd week there still wasn't electricity. Don't chance it!!!!!! Take your pets!!! They are part of the family and deserve to be protected too! Be safe everyone!
