"Operation Save A Life" calls on Houstonians to help save a Galveston Pet's Life In the wake of Hurricane Ike, many animals have been lost, abandoned, and injured on Galveston Island. The Houston SPCA is asking the community to help give these storm victims a second chance at life by participating in "Operation Save a Life." The Houston SPCA's "Operation Save a Life" is asking every family who is able to foster a Galveston pet for ten days. If after ten days, the displaced animal is not reclaimed by its original owner, the foster parent has the option to adopt the animal or return him/her to the shelter for placement. There are a few requirements to participate in "Operation Save A Life." •Current pets in a foster home must be fully vaccinated and spayed or neutered. Families interested in fostering can go to www.houstonspca.org to download an application or come to the Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Drive, Houston, TX 77024 beginning Friday, September 19th at 10 am. The hope for all of these animals is that they will be reunited with their original owners or given a second chance at life in new a loving, permanent home. The Houston SPCA is committed to the rescue and recovery efforts to save the thousands of animals left behind after the wrath of Hurricane Ike. Every lost pet will be photographed and its picture placed on line at www.houstonspca.org. The Houston SPCA is located at 900 Portway Drive, and currently open 7 days a week from 8 am to 6 pm. The phone number is 713.869.7722. If you can't foster, please support the life-saving programs and services of the Houston SPCA by clicking here. 17 CommentsLeave a comment |
I WOULD LOVE TO HELP WITH THEESE ANIMALS AND I COULD GIVE THEM A HOME ( I WAS WONDERING DO WE GET TO PICK THE ONE WE WANT TO SHELTER FOR TEN DAYS?)IF YOU COULD JUST CALL ME TO LET ME NOW MY NUMBER IS 832-407-1380
Please help.... we can get no where and need help finding out if 2 cats are still alive. My sister in law tried to come back home and was turned around at the gate... she left the cats only because she had come to dallas one day before it was announced that the storm was headed for Galveston. They are her babies and she never would have left them in harms way. She only was coming up for an extended weekend and had left plenty of food and water out. But now we are afraid and can get NO help anywhere. Anyone have any ideas??? PLEASE HELP... her address is 7400 Jones and the Island Bay Resort Apartments. We don't even know if they are standing... They need to form a group that can man this and go out and answer individuals concerns...
I live in El Paso and could possibly help with rescue or whatever you may need. We own a home in Galveston and have not been able to return to see our damage. Just waiting for word to get back there. I was born in Houston and grew up in Beaumont, spent all my young years on Crystal Beach, Bolivar and Gilchrist. It just breaks my heart to see all the loss.
My heart goes out to the families who have lost their loving pets. We have three dogs and I can not imagine losing or leaving them. We sent a donation, but I know that's not enough. I have been watching KHOU/TXCN non stop since last week and the devastation is horrific. By what I've seen, the animal shelters and organizations are doing a great job.

My heart goes out to everyone affected by Hurricane Ike. I know how tough this is because I have lost my home. BUT, we are all ok. All the furbabies and my family are ok. We evacuated to my parent's home in Baytown...only lost the fence there. It just breaks my heart that there are so many people and animals displaced...especially the animals that were left behind. This is why you don't leave them. You never know how bad it will be. I hope the Kemp family is able to find their pets. That would be tough to be on a trip and not be able to get back for your beloved pets. (Anyone who can help, PLEASE do! These furbabies need a stable environment and a safe place until their families find them again. Second chance kisses are the best. You won't regret helping!)
God bless everyone in their recovery efforts. It's a tough time, but Texans are tough! We can pull through this together. People helping people, neighbors helping neighbors...and people helping the helpless animals. We can show the world that Texans are the best and that we WILL overcome the storm named IKE!
I live in Tennessee and have been following the coverage online. I was wondering if any of the shelter animals (i.e. animals that were already up for adoption prior to the storm) could be evacuated to shelters in other states to make room for those rescued and housed for families displaced by the storm. I know that we run transports for animal rescue groups across our state all the time. Surely something could be done to extend this service to disaster areas.
To Kathy Kemp - I have the address and will get a rescue report to the Houston SPCA rescue teams on Galveston Island. Please email this blog or me at sfox@hspca.org with your phone number.

I am interested in possibly fostering one of these displaced animals. Do we pick what we want to foster or give top choices or just foster whatever is available? Please email
I am from Destrehan, La. & was wondering in ya'll have a website where people can go to look at the pets that have been rescued. It proved very helpful for us after Katrina.
I left for Gustav with my 5 cats & 1 dog. I saw what happens and took it heart after Katrina. An animal should never be where it's not safe for you to be. They cannot help themselves in a life & death situation,we should protect them as we would a member of our family since that is what they are "members of our family".

I am from Houston, I would like to help out in any way possible. It is hard to see these little animals that were separated from their mothers. I know it is hard to take care of the little ones, it is almost like taking care of a baby..you have to feed them constantly. Please email me if any help is needed....
Anyone interested in fostering displaced animals during the Hurricane can contact Cindy Perini at cperini@velaw.com. She runs the Houston Young Lawyers Animal Welfare Committee posting board and needs people desperately to help with animals.
Not to jump past the issue of this blog - but I have already responded with my thoughts on this matter under the story about the 5 abandoned terriers. Although the input from Kathy Kemp above did make me wonder about reasons animals may have been left behind.
But ... Melody - You lost your home???!! OMG - I am so sorry! You have my prayers and good thoughts!! I am thankful your family and furbabies are safe! I know you would never leave any of your family members!!
