The latest from the Houston Humane Society. We are presently caring for nearly 500 animals, though we have no electricity and are running entirely by generators. Due to our ability to care for and house animals throughout the storm, the Houston Humane Society has taken in animals from Pasadena Animal Control, LaPorte Animal Control, and animals from several other municipalities. In addition to the organizations listed, Good Samaritans around Houston are steadily bringing in stray and lost animals. We still have room for Houston's strays, though the HHS is rapidly running through our supply of food for the animals. The HHS is in desperate need of food, towels, and water for the animals. At usual capacity, the Houston Humane Society goes through 200 pounds of dog food a day. Now, with our capacity nearly tripled and increasing rapidly, the dog food is going fast. Due to the number of animals in our care and expected to be in our care and our lack of electricity, the HHS has suspended all regularly scheduled spay and neuter services and adoptions until further notice. Veterinarians will be seeing clients with priority given to those animals in most need as a direct effect of the recent storm. If you are interested in donating, please come by the Houston Humane Society at 14700 Almeda Rd., Houston, TX 77053 or email helphoustonhumanesociety@gmail.com. The animals need you now more than ever! 8 CommentsLeave a comment |
Why in the world would the humane society give the selfish owners the chance to pick up their pets? They left them behind and should not be given back. The animals who were left deserve good pet owners like myself, and not some loser who didn't care enough to take the pet with them when they evacuated. I really hope the people who abandoned their pets lost everything. They do not deserve anything. They got what they deserved. As for the people who didn't leave their pets, or didn't own a pet my heart goes out to them. As for the homeless pets, I plan to foster & adopt one maybe two. My pets that I own and love would love to have a new brother or sister who has been traumatized. Animals need love. Can you imagine how they must have felt when they were left behind, to go through a horrible hurricane to be left for dead? I can't. My heart goes to all the pets. God be with them and please give them good pet owners and not the trashy previous owner.
Is the above address also the mailing address so that I could send a gift card to them for food/supplies? I lost my home, but we are all ok...furbabies included because we evacuated. I can't send much, but I know every little bit helps! Also, what stores would they prefer? Walmart, Petsmart, Petco? Thanks Stacy!
I applaud and am deeply grateful that there are dedicated people out there rescuing and caring for lost or abandoned animals. I'm out of state and would like to help but I have a question. Is the Houston Humane Society and Houston SPCA two different organizations? I've already placed a donation with the SPCA, but I'd gladly donate to the Humane Society as well.
Reese: Yes, the Humane Society and the Houston SPCA are two different organizations. They both need as much help as they can get right now.
Thanks Kimberly. I made a donation to the Humane Society as well. I hope other animal lovers from around the country do the same. I'm sure any amount will help.
If Houston Humane Society's many dedicated staff and volunteers start to get too fatigued, please let your municipal, county and state humane supervisors know and have them give a call/send an email to Noah's Wish Animal Disaster Rescue. We successfully managed over 1200 animals in the Shreveport, LA "megashelter" during Gustav in partnership with LSART, HSUS, ASPCA, and IFAW, and were asked back by LSART (Louisiana Animal Rescue Team, a coalition of LA state humane services and fish & game dept.) to Bossier City, LA after Ike. Noah's Wish is standing by to assist if you need us. As a non-government non-profit entity that must work with the Incident Command System of your state, however, we must be officially invited to help out. We have completed our mission to LA and are ready and willing to assist...if your public humane officials care to invite us. Meanwhile, our volunteers are watching your situation with anxiety (I have cousins in Houston) and know how damaged infrastructure can make hard work more difficult, and add to the time that you must shelter evacuated animals while their families rebuild or find new homes. No doubt you will receive donations from those of us who are more used to flying/driving to disaster areas all over the U.S. and the world to assist personally, but until we get an invitation, that's all we can do. FYI, please go to our site for contact info and background: www.noahswish.org. Good luck and thanks for the work you do for Houston's animals.
Does anyone know if the woman headlined in MSNCBS news got her Sheppard's from her home in Galveston. I want to help her. I feel lost out here in Oregon unable to get those babies out of the destruction. What should I do?
i am a animal lover,if i had the money i would go help to groom the dogs and cats.
