The Louisiana State Animal Response Team mobilized evacuation and sheltering teams and received hundreds of animals at shelters in Shreveport and Alexandria.
The HSUS, operating under the authority of the Louisiana Department of Homeland Security and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry through the Louisiana SPCA and Louisiana State Animal Rescue Team (LSART), reports their activities over the past 48 hours include: Assisting in the operation of an evacuation shelter in Shreveport, La. where people and pets will ride out the storm. More than 300 animals were there as of Sunday morning. Evacuating 83 dogs from the animal shelter in Lake Charles to Caddo Parish's animal shelter. Evacuating 25 pets from the New Orleans Evacuation Center. Most of these animals belong to first responders. They will be sheltered in Baton Rouge for the duration of the storm. Responding to an urgent request today from Animal Rescue New Orleans to evacuate 100 animals from their shelter in New Orleans to Folsom, La. Noah's Wish reports that in Shreveport, the shelter continued to take in animals from the parish pick up points, as well as process those that have self-evauated with their pets. Current count in the shelter is 480 cats, dogs and exotics. Jefferson Parish has reported they have completed pick ups and the final truck is on its way to the shelter. The Covington shelter opened Sunday morning at the Lyons Elementary School. Intake was underway as evacuees arrived at the shelter with their pets. All animals housed at the animal control office in the City of Slidell were transported to Jackson, Mississippi where they will ride out the storm.
