Three years ago this week, Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast and today Gustav is stalking Coastal residents. The most devastating natural disaster in U.S. history, Katrina wrought unimaginable havoc on the lives of hundreds of thousands of residents of Louisiana and Mississippi. Thousands of residents did not evacuate at least in part because they could not bring their pets. What it also brought about were some crucial--and long neglected--changes in the way we plan for and respond to disasters. Click here to read The State of Animals in a Disaster from the Humane Society of the United States. Here in the greater Houston area, the Harris County Disaster Animal Management Task Force was formed to meet the needs of animals in a disaster. Click here to download their brochure, "How To Prepare Your Pets in Case of Disaster." And, should Gustav's track change and evacuations become ordered for our area, click here for a list of pet friendly hotels. For the latest on Gustav, click here. Thank goodness things have changed so that pets are included in evac plans! I hope if Gustave does come this way people are prepared and take their furry babies with them! I know I am & will! Stay safe!!!
Agree - how awful that some people were left in harms way simply because they refused to leave their pets at home to die alone. As a pet owner, I can tell you I would never leave my pets at home alone to fend for themselves in a hurricane situation and I don't expect anyone else to either. This planning was long in coming and we need to be thankful to all those who have made sure pets now must be included in disaster planning.
Thank you Humane Society for getting people to understand the importance of being able to bring your pets with you. Alot of people laugh at the idea of not leaving without your pets, to them it more than likley is just a pet. But to me it is my family, my kids. I have no family here, no kids and never been married. My two dogs are my kids, they depend on me to take of them. In return I get unconditional love, companions and two dogs that are always, always excited and happy to see me when I come home from work. They truley are my best friends, and if I had to make that choice of leaving them behind or risk perishing? I would without hesitation stay with my two faithful friends who love me as much as I love them. Thank You Humane Society
