"Plowing through cats with a bulldozer is clear-cut animal cruelty...!" says Alley Cat Allies President Becky Robinson. A TV station in Richmond, WRLH-TV, contracted with a pest control company to eradicate a colony of feral cats who made their home on station property. Three cats were trapped and killed, and many more remained in harms way when the company brought bulldozers on site to eliminate the cats' homes. Alley Cat Allies issued a press release and offered to help to the Richmond SPCA in negotiating with the company, which was not allowing local rescuers to humanely trap and move the cats to safety. Now the operator of Critter Control, the pest control company - Keith Copi - is facing up to a year in jail on each of three charges of unnecessarily killing feral cats. Copi is charged under animal-cruelty statutes that make it illegal to kill any animal unnecessarily. The good news is that the community of rescuers came together to protect the rest of the cats who will be trapped, spayed or neutered, and either returned or adopted depending upon temperament and age. OMG! I can't even describe how horrified I am about this! I'm glad that rescuers are helping the remaining cats. This is unbelievable! And just when you think you've heard it all...!
This is absolutly outragous!!! I am soooo infuriated over this. How dare them! Everyone that was involved in this needs to be charged with animal cruelty. They need Jail time and probation with community service. I think their community service deed should be mandatory volunteer time at animal shelters, with supervision of course.
**Please, Everyone** If you have pets, it is your responsibility to spay or neuter your pets. This kind of this can be prevented if we just do this one simple thing!
If you dont plan or your cant afford to take care of the pet then dont get one, bottom line! The cant afford is really a crock of S^&% because there are low cost to no cost spay/neuter options.
My comments left on the WRLH website:
SHAME ON this station and management of this station for killing feral cats by bulldozing over them and hiring a "pest control" company to remove them AFTER humane alternatives were suggested. I have been involved in animal rescue for over 10 years and this is about the worst case of animal cruelty I have encountered. You should all be ashamed of your actions. Just remember, the animal rescue community is not simply a bunch of crazy old “cat ladies”, we are many, we vote, we purchase products and we have a voice. That voice has been heard ALL over the world and this information has been disseminated all over the world. Your act of wanton cruelty has not gone unnoticed.
I live in the Richmond community and the pest control guy, Mr. Keith Copi, will be tried in one of the local courts on Thursday, August 14th. I plan on attending, as do some of my fellow animal rescue friends. He faces possible jail time (I think up to 6 years) and as much as $7,500.00 in fines. His local attorney released a statement recently that said Mr. Copi's health had been affected by all the media attention.
