Prepare your pet for disaster today!

Flood for blog.jpg

The Harris County Disaster Animal Management Task Force is urging pet owners to prepare for disaster! Hurricane season is here and the best way to protect your family is to have a plan in place before disaster strikes.

Photograph each pet and store these pictures with other important documents in sealed/waterproof plastic bags. Make sure that all animals are up-to-date on their vaccinations. All dogs and cats should wear collars and identification tags with current information. Include the name and phone number of a friend OUTSIDE the greater Houston area in case local phone service is disrupted immediately following a disaster. Dogs should wear nylon or leather collars only. Never place tags on training collars or choke chains. Cats should wear a break-a-way/safety collar.

Pack a portable pet disaster kit to include.

Molded plastic pet carrier
Copy of your pet's rabies and vaccination records sealed in a plastic bag
Pet first aid book and kit
Two-week supply of pet food
Bottled water
One-month supply of your pet's regular medications
Non-spill food and water bowls
Cat litter
Cat litter pan
Leash
Plastic bags (for pet waste disposal)
Sheets (one to cover each pet carrier)
Blankets
Non-electric can opener
Newspaper
Disinfectants
Paper Towels
Comb/Brush

Make sure your pet has a safe traveling carrier that has been labeled with your emergency contact information. You should plan on enough supplies for at least one week. Take your pet's favorite toy or blanket with you to help minimize their stress.

If you must evacuate, take your pet with you! If conditions are unsafe for people, they are unsafe for pets. Pet owners should identify an evacuation route and make temporary housing arrangements before a storm hits. This often means finding a boarding facility or animal shelter out of the evacuation area and in the area where their family will be staying.

I'm just about ready! I've already restocked my pet kit (I use a large tool box) and updated photos, information, etc. Just need to get a couple more kennels to replace some old ones! (I just hope and pray that we won't need to use them!!!)
I'd like to add something else to the above list. Keep cars & gas cans filled with gas. With the price of gas going up & up, you don't want to get caught with a low tank and no backup! So please don't take any chances! I know it hurts the pocketbook right now (I know, I spent over $130 filling up our cars and 2 gas cans this weekend!), but you can always use that gas as backup on a tight week! Be prepared and be safe!
