Breed Specific Bills Introduced in PA and OH

Pit Bull for blog.jpg

Pennsylvania House Bill 2553 will remove the state's prohibition on breed specific local ordinances, thereby allowing municipalities to adopt any type of law applicable to dangerous dogs, including breed-specific ordinances.

Ohio House Bill 568, introduced by Representative Tyrone Yates of Cincinnati, seeks to prohibit the ownership, keeping, or harboring of a dog that "belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog." Furthermore, if this bill is passed and adopted into law, all such dogs will be seized and euthanized.

HB 568 unacceptably provides that:

No person shall own, keep, or harbor a dog that belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog.

No later than 90 days after the effective date of this bill, a person who owns, keeps, or harbor a pit bull dog will be forced to surrender the dog to a dog warden.

Within ten days of surrender, the dog warden shall euthanize the dog.

If an officer has probable cause to believe that a dog is a pit bull, the officer may apply for a search warrant. After obtaining a search warrant, an officer shall seize the dog and transfer the dog to the dog warden, who shall euthanize the dog within 10 days.

This is B-S! Just because it's a "pit bull" does not mean that it's a mean dog! If it is a mean pit, it's because the owner made it mean! I've known many pit bulls who were the best dogs! They were family dogs who didn't fight other dogs, watched over children, loved cats, so on and so forth! And to make people surrender their pets and to euthanize the animal is just uncomprehensible, I don't care what breed it is!!! IT IS B-S! This angers me to no end! I've got to find out who to write! This really upsets me!

Hi Melody!

The AKC website (www.akc.org) has all the information on who to write letters to in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

I agree totally with Melody - this is BS!! I couldnt even imagine being made to comply with this type of law!! And if there is no stopping it - no way of making it go away - then there needs to be some type of "grandfathering"!! People should not be forced to relinquish pets / four legged family members they have had for possibly years due to a new (and ignorant) law!!

Thank you Donna! I couldn't think of the term to use! "Grandfathering"!
