From the BARC STARZ Team...

Hello friends,

Hope you all are gearing up for a great Memorial Day weekend! If you don't have plans already, please come join us at our first MEMORIAL DAY at MEMORIAL PARK Adopt-a-thon on Sunday, May 25th from 11am-4pm. We need lots of volunteers to help and of course, lots of great adopters to come meet the BARC dogs and cats waiting for new homes. If you'd like to help by volunteering, please contact Fran at foyle67@hotmail.com. And please spread the word to all of your friends who might be looking for a new best friend of the 4-legged variety!

And now for our BARC STARZ of the week.... We'll start with the cats since we left them out the last 2 weeks (our apologies to the kitties!)

Gorgeous Lindy is an adult, spayed, female who is probably a Maine Coon mix. She has the wonderful fur of a Maine Coon, but she is petite. Lindy has been at BARC since December 2007, and she really, really needs to find a home soon. Lindy is in one of the open adoption rooms (no cages) where she has learned how to live with other kitties. This beautiful cat needs a patient owner who is willing to help Lindy feel safe. You can visit with Lindy at BARC. If you have questions, please contact Nela Brown at ntbrown@comcast.net.

We also have an update on Claude, who you may remember from 3 weeks ago. We mistakenly told you he had been adopted. Actually, Claude is in foster care but still needs a home of his own. We have discovered that this guy is 10 plus years old. We're not sure how someone could part with him after 10 years, but he was turned in by his owner back in March. Claude was already neutered and declawed on the front!! He is so gentle and sweet, a little shy at first, but warms up fast. I am sure he is scared and lonely and wondering why he is in a cage now. :o( Claude does not really like other cats, so he will need to be in a one-cat-only home. Do you know someone that needs a companion? A lap cat? Or maybe an elderly friend that would like a grown, gentle boy to love? He's had all of his shots, FIV/FELUK negative, neutered, fully litterbox trained. Claude loves to be petted and he will purr and purr. He also likes being held and loved on. We think he really wants to be 'home' again and not be confused and saddened from being abandoned. Contact Nela for more information at ntbrown@comcast.net.

Gorgeous Toby (A883944) is a pure bred German Shepherd, just as lovely and sweet as they come. You didn't know pure breds like this ended up at BARC?? Well, sadly they do all too often. Toby and his brother were turned in by their owner a few weeks ago. His brother has been adopted but Toby is left... He's heartworm negative, fully vaccinated and neutered. He is a jumper, so potential adopters need a tall fence and should plan to keep him mainly indoors. He is good with other dogs and walks well on a leash. The vets estimate he's about 3 years old. For more information, contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

Who can resist this face? Meet Harrison, A888214, a chow-newfoundland mix as best we can tell. His best breed description would be "fluffy love bug" actually! He's very sweet and gentle, and although he might be considered a big dog to some (he's about 20 inches tall), he's not near big enough to be a pure bred Newfoundland. He's got a gorgeous brown coat which we just had groomed so he's ready for his new home! For more information about Harrison, contact kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

This gentle, sweet soul is Peter, 1 year old male Labrador retriever mix, ID A885599. Peter is one of those rare calm young labs whose gentle sweet nature just shines through. He's heartworm negative, fully vaccinated and just needs to be neutered and he can go home with you!!! He'd be a great family dog. For more info, contact kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

Meet "The Fozz," A886354, a big fuzzy male lab mix you can't help but love. Fozzy looks like a lab but he has a big fuzzy coat. He's a relative BARC newcomer, but he wants out of there NOW! To be first in line to meet him, contact kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

There are several litters of puppies with nursing moms currently at BARC. These dogs need a foster home asap. Young puppies cannot survive in the shelter environment. It truly is an amazing and rewarding experience to save an entire litter. The mom does most of the work the first few weeks! We just don't have enough fosters willing to help so sadly many, many of these litters must be euthanized. If you can help or would like more information on the BARC foster program, please email us at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net for more info.

UPDATE! Last week we introduced you to Ranger, A885434. This gorgeous boy is an Alaskan malamute mix, about 2 years old. We have 2 generous donors who have offered to pay the cost of Ranger's heartworm treatment. Now all we need is a foster home (or adopter!) who can keep him during treatment. He cannot have the treatment at the shelter. Can anyone help save Ranger??? Rescue groups...there would be no fee to pull Ranger and the heartworm treatment will be covered. Can anyone accept him into their program? We need to find a foster for him by the end of the week, so time is off the essence. Please email kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net if you can help!

Finally, we wanted to update you on Elsie, A884245, a gorgeous collie mix about 3 years old. Elsie was adopted but she is not doing well in her new home. She is very possessive of her human and doesn't like sharing the attention with other dogs. We had a lot of people interested in Elsie back when we ran this a couple weeks ago....so we wanted to let you all know she's back and still looking for the right home! Contact Elizabeth for more info about Elsie at evitek@yahoo.com

There's lots more animals we could feature, but we'll stop here for the week! Please email us with any questions. If you are looking for a particular type of dog or cat, please email us at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net and we'll do our best to be on the lookout for one that will work for you.
