Pets left behind after foreclosures

Many pet owners will tell you their animals are more like part of the family. But 11 News is hearing about a disturbing trend that's separating families.

Tough economic times may have pets paying the highest price.

At the Houston Humane Society, a timid dog named Jaida nervously waits. Her surroundings are unfamiliar.

"(She's) very confused obviously," said the Humane Society's Melanie Rushe. "She clearly is not loving life right now, because she's been uprooted from her home where she's lived for just about a year."

Along with her human companions, you see, Jaida may not know the difference between foreclosure and fetch, but she's affected by it nonetheless.

Well, I wrote a nice long, on my soap box posting. Somehow it got lost! Oh well...so, that being said...my heart and prayers go out to all involved in such a tough situation. I hope that people start realizing that they have to start from the beginning planning out a back-up, just in case they can't pull themselves out of the foreclosure. I've read many articles where people think they can pull themselves out, so they are stuck at the last minute struggling to find a place to live. That unfortunately compounds the problem when a pet is involved! I'd live in a tent before I'd abandon my pets. (Again, that's just me.) I took responsibility for them when I brought them into my home. Therefore, I feel that it would be my responsibility to make sure that if it came down to it, they were taken care of too. (Sorry, soap box!) It's sad enough that so many people are having to deal with the loss of a home. But when children and animals are involved it is even worse. I pray that the economy turns around and that this trend stops and stops soon! There are resources to go to to try and find help for your pet. Humane societies, Best Friends Animal Society, etc. Please, don't let your pet suffer too. They are part of the family and deserve consideration if something like this happens. Plan ahead, please. Again, hope & prayers for all involved in this kind of unfortunate situation!

What I am seeing are MANY people who purchased a $500K home who KNEW they could not afford that home without a subprime loan and now the animals have to pay for their greed? That is just wrong. I am sorry but if you would not leave your children behind, why would you leave a pet? Cats/dogs cost less than a child (usually) and you don't have to send them to college or buy them a car. I just don't understand that "best of luck to ya" mentality when someone dumps their pet or worse yet, tapes their cat up in a box and shoves it in the back of the closet to die because they got tossed out of a house they couldn't afford in the first place. PEOPLE NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS. I agree with the other poster, I would live in a tent before I would give up my animals. I would do whatever it took to make sure that they were taken care of. Also, I have made provisions for my pets when I die. They will not be going to a shelter or tossed outside because greedy relatives are too selfish to take them in and just want to sell off all my things. Abandoning your animal is a felony as it is considered animal cruelty. I sure wish law makers would start enforcing that law.

What a sad situation for everyone - especially the pets since they end up in shelters! Not to be repetative - but I too would live in a tent (it would have to be a really large tent!) before I would give up any of my furbabies!! They are my family!! Please - always plan for the worst - and make sure all family members are taken care of no matter what the crisis!!
