A pet food maker whose contaminated product may have led to the deaths of thousands of dogs and cats in North America has agreed to settle lawsuits with pet owners in the U.S. and Canada.
In March 2007, Menu recalled millions of containers of pet food. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration found melamine in samples of Menu Foods' products. The melamine was traced to contaminated wheat gluten imported from China. The definitive terms of settlement, together with a motion for preliminary approval, are scheduled to be filed with the U.S. District Court on May 1, 2008. with the hearing scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on May 14, 2008. The scheduling for Canadian court approval has not yet been determined, but is expected to occur in a similar time frame.
