The slaughter of 275,000 baby seals began Friday at dawn.
Friday marked the opening of this year's Canadian commercial seal hunt-the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth. Click here to read more, watch the video and take action. WARNING: There are graphic pictures and video posted on the HSUS website. Seal hunt facts, from the HSUS: (1) In Canada, more than 95 percent of the seals killed each year are less than 3 months old. At the time of slaughter, many have yet to eat their first solid meal or take their first swim, and they are utterly defenseless against the hunters. (2) The seals are killed for their fur, which is sold in fashion markets in Europe, Russia and Asia. (3) Nations around the world have taken action to end their trade in seal products or announced their intention to do so, including Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Panama, Slovenia and the United States. (4) In Canada, sealers are commercial fishermen, who earn only a small fraction of their annual incomes from killing seals during the off-season. The HSUS is accusing the Canadian government of a cover-up. Rebecca Aldworth, director of Animal Programs for Humane Society International, released the following statement in response to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans restricting journalists and animal welfare experts access to the commercial slaughter of baby seals. On the opening day of the Magdalene Islands hunt, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans refused to issue permits for the first half of the day. "The DFO desperately wants to keep these images out of the public eye," said Aldworth. "The Canadian government knows if the European Commission is allowed to see what is actually happening on the ice this year, it will realize there is no humane way to conduct this hunt," she concluded. "This hunt is inhumane and unsustainable, and it must stop now." Photo credits: The HSUS and Marcus Gyger, the HSUS 2 CommentsLeave a comment |
(I can't and won't watch the video!) I have signed petitions, written letters, and am boycotting Canadian seafood! This is cruel and inhumane and needs to stop! Kudos to the countries who are taking a stand against it! Thanks to the HSUS for your tireless efforts to end this cruelty!
This is horrifying. I cant even bare to watch this. This needs to be stopped. How would they feel if we had open season on them, and were as brutal to them. I hope these people get what they deserve.
