Coast-to-Coast Crackdown on Cockfighters

6:03 AM Wed, Mar 19, 2008 |
Stacy Fox

Call it one of the worst weekends ever for cockfighting criminals. Arrests were made in at least six separate incidents coast to coast. From March 14 to 16, cockfighters in California, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Minnesota and North Carolina felt the heat from law enforcement.

"Red Rooster" and "Tattered Wing"

The high point of the weekend may be the successful sting operation in the Pacific Northwest, where U.S. Marshalls arrested 63 people throughout Washington and Oregon during "Operation Red Rooster" and "Operation Tattered Wing." The raids on the massive, multi-state cockfighting network valida...

An Iowa town has conditionally backed off on its plan to pay a $5 bounty for feral cats and instead will consider a proposal offered by a coalition of animal welfare groups, including Best Friends, Alley Cat Allies and Friends to Felines.

Vance Trively, mayor of Randolph, agreed to meet with coalition representatives after mounting protests by animal welfare groups across the country, including Best Friends. The Animal Help team, through the Best Friends Network, began marshalling volunteers and resources, and coordinating with local groups.

The coalition will meet today in Omaha to draft the propo...

Congress and the nation call for action after investigation into animal abuse at a CA dairy cow slaughter plant

6:20 AM Thu, Mar 13, 2008 |
Stacy Fox

In Wednesday's testimony before the House Energy and Commerce investigative subcommittee, Hallmark/Westland executive Steve Mendell conceded that downed cows - those who are too sick or injured to walk - went into the food supply after the committee chairman played videotape evidence from an undercover investigation by The Humane Society of the United States showing a "downer" cow entering the plant's kill box - which is the final step before slaughter.

Mendell previously stated unequivocally that he was unaware of rampant abuse of cattle at his facility, which ...
