Jim Stevenson, president of the Galveston Ornithological Society, was on trial for shooting what he claimed was a stray cat. But prosecutors argued the cat had become the pet of a toll-booth worker who claimed he had been feeding and caring for the cat and that he had considered the animal his. However, defense attorney Tad A. Nelson has said the animal was feral and had no owner.

The jury, made up of eight women and four men, was hopelessly deadlocked.
