SAN ANTONIO-A killer whale at the SeaWorld in San Antonio has died unexpectedly. SeaWorld spokesman Fran Stephenson says Taku, a 14-year-old male killer whale, died Wednesday night. Taku had been showing signs of infection for the three days before his death, but he was responding to treatment, Stephenson said. A cause of death has not been determined. Results of an examination will be available in six weeks. Stephenson said there is wide disparity on estimates for the life expectancy of killer whales. How sad! I know that the SeaWorld family is devastated by the unexpected death of Taku. I am so sorry for their loss. Things like this always bring to mind the effects of captivity on animals. It's so exciting to see them up close, something that most people would never see in a lifetime, but then you think about the animal's welfare. Unfortunately, there is too high a price to the animal in so many cases. My thoughts and prayers are with Taku's family.
You are so right, Melody! I too send prayers to Taku and his family!! I am sure he brought lots of joy to lots of people - and will be remembered always!
