National animal rights and welfare organizations reacted swiftly to Tuesday's felony indictment of Atlanta Falcon's quarterback Michael Vick. Here's what they are saying and doing: American Humane Association. From their website, "The American Humane Association, the only national organization working to protect children and animals, is asking the National Football League to take a firm stance and make a strong statement against animal fighting in the wake of the indictment of Atlanta Falcons player Michael Vick." "The NFL is in the position to help its players and staff recognize the severity of this blood sport and send a message to its players and fans that such participation, in any form, will not be accepted or endorsed," American Humane President and CEO Marie Belew Wheatley said. "Those in the position of a role model, such as NFL players, benefit from public support and have a responsibility to set a good example for adults and children alike." Go to americanhumane.org to read their entire statement. American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Said President & CEO Ed Sayres, "It is gratifying to see federal authorities taking an active role in investigating dog fighting, which is a felony offense in 48 states, and something that we in the animal welfare world take extremely seriously indeed." To read their press release go to aspca.org Best Friends Society. Has their online petition at bestfriends.org Humane Society of the United States. From their website, "...Three months ago, suspicions of dogfighting on Vick's property in Virginia came to light along with chilling descriptions of the fighters hanging, electrocuting, shooting and slamming to death dogs who didn't "perform" as desired." They are encouraging people to "ask NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend Michael Vick from the NFL immediately." They have an online letter that you can send at hsus.org People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA sent a letter to all of Vick's corporate sponsors, Falcons CEO Arthur Blank, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell from hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, civil rights leader The Rev. Al Sharpton, and PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk roundly condemning dogfighting and other forms of violence. They also have an online letter that you can sign at peta.org To read the indictment in its entirety go to vickindictment.pdf 11 CommentsLeave a comment |
Most disgusting thing I have ever read. Michael Vick should definately be suspended from any sports events and banned from ever playing again.

I read the indictment, it is absolutely sickening. This man is making millions of dollars doing something that not just anybody has the opportunity to do and not only does he jepardise that, he does it in an inhumane manner. It's just unbelievable! I've signed petitions urging the Pro-Associations to take a stand against dog-fighting. (They need to take a stronger stand against all bad personal conduct! Kids look up to them as role models. So like it or not, that's what they are and they need to act accordingly. I read a response in another article by a woman whose child asked what was wrong with dog fighting. Again, accountability for actions so children/people understand that you have to be responsible for your actions no matter who you are or how much money you have.) It's also sad that these poor dogs will never have the love of a caring home because they were fighting dogs and will more than likely be put down once this case is over with. It was never their choice to be a fighting dog.
The connection between animal cruelty and domestic violence is so well-documented that it is referred to simply as The Link. If something isn't done to hold him accountable and seek help for this sick behavior, we'll be reading about the death of a woman or child at his hands before too long.
What a cruel person he is! And I am sure he always thought he was above the law due to who he is and what he does!! Hopefully justice will be served!! Hey - here's an idea - let's pour water on him and then hit him with some electricity since that is what he is supposed to have done to at least one female pit that did not perform up to his expectations!!! As they say, do unto others as you would have others due unto you!! Problem solved!
I am a member of the ASPCA and donate so these animals are not treated this way. We are their voices and this type of cruel behavior that adults bestow upon these animals must stop. These animals do have feelings. These uneducated adults are cold-hearted. They need to be punished the same way they do these animals. WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO STOP THIS FROM CONTINUING? All animals have a heart and feelings.
I just read in my ASPCA enews letter that Vick will go to court next Thurs., July 26. It says he could face up to 6 years in jail. I don't remember the fine, but it was ridiculously low! That's not near enough punishment for these crimes. I hope that he gets the max for the torture he and the other people did to these poor babies. UGH! That still isn't enough! But then again, he will lose his career, sponsers, and way of life! Oh, but wait, these animals lost the opportunity for a love filled life and those who haven't been killed will be because they will be deemed to be to dangerous for adoption. Like Ozis asked, "WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO STOP THIS?"! I am writing everyone that I can think of in politics and wherever else (NFL, etc.) that could make a difference. Dog fighting is cruel, it's wrong, and it won't be tolerated!
Although I think he should get much more than a 6 yr prison term and a little fine (life in prison would be ok with me - he took their lives, his life as he knows it should be taken too!)! But lets pray he is not allowed to plea bargain the charges down to a lesser charge!!! That in itself would be criminal!! Sure would like to read in the next few days that all of his endorsment sponsors have released him from any endorsement contracts (apparently a new shoe named after him is getting ready to hit the market!)!!
You know, the more I see on this story the madder I get. I just saw pictures of one of the dogs that was confiscated in this raid. It's face was scarred and the look in the poor baby's eyes was so sad. How could he look into their eyes and do what he did? How does anyone look into the eyes of any of God's creatures (human or animal) and do the horrible things they do? I guess they have no soul.
I would like to more people go to jail for the abuse of animals.Personnaly I think making any animal fight is the dumbist thing I ever heard of.I dont even like my own dog trying to fight other dogs on her own property. So I keep her in here own back yard Thank you
The shame is in our laws that allow this to go on, they will pass some silly laws just to get their name in lights, but when it comes to animal cruelty, they drag their feet. Poor dogs, will do anything ask of them for something to eat, up to and including fight to the death, what more loyalty could you ask and then turn around and die for that same love, people like vick should be striped of all their human right for the rest of their earth life!!!
