WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday.
George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.
"George was brave – he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off." "If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it." One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl. "George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him – one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George." But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said. South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack. In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed. 22 CommentsLeave a comment |
What a wonderful little hero George is!! He gave his life protecting the children!! I am very sad for his family on the loss of their beloved little George!
This is ridiculous. This is only being reported because it involved a pit bull. Had this been a German Shepard or any other type of dog no one would have ever heard of is. It's unfortunate that a dog was put down because of this and unthinkable that a child was or may have been hurt, but the pit bull is getting a bad rap. As a pit bull owner with children I find this story the reason pit bulls have a bad name
Go George! Pitbulls are dangerous, unpredictable and inbred like their owners. Outlaw pitbulls!
I also believe that pit bulls get a bum rap. I have been around many of them in my 52 years on this earth and have never had a problem with any of them...in fact there was one that growled (he did not attack, he only growled) at my husband when he jokingly raised his voice at me...and the dog wasn't ours, it belonged to a friend.
I believe the owners of the dogs bear the blame for either mistreating, training them to fight or totally ignoring the animals.
YEA George! What a brave little soul! My heart goes out to the family and friends of this special hero!
What a brave little fella, those children were very lucky to have had George around. He gave his life for them...What a hero.....I hate pit bull dogs.....
LEE: It has been scientifically proven that it is in a Pit Bulls nature to attack and kill. Yes, most Pit Bulls are not that way, but some are. Just like raising wolve's... some will attack. It's only natural for them.
I used to believe that Pit Bulls were getting a bum rap and that it was the owners fault. But after hearing the statistics regarding attacks and the Pit Bull breed having hundreds more of bites and attacks documented I must say that I have changed my mind.
The first problem for any dog is an owner that isn't responsible and doesn't keep the dog and others safe. The second is that perhaps Bit Bulls do have more of a predisposion to attacking.
George was a great dog and did a wonderful thing. I feel sorry for George and that his life had to end in this way.
denny...when has there been a scientific study that shows that it is a pitbulls nature to attack and kill?? I would like to see your proof of this "scientific study". And to all of you statiticians out there, how are the statistics accurate if only those attacks that are reported just happen to be about pitbulls, not the german shepards, rottweilers, and other so called "aggressive breeds"?????????? I think everyones ignorance and the medias negative attention to this breed is the Pitbulls number one problem!!!
George was a beautiful little dog that did not deserve this but he showed his love for these children by giving his life to protect them. I am also very sad for this family who had to have George put down because he was so badly hurt in his confrontation with these pit bulls.
I've had my share of owning some pit bulls in the past and not one ever showed my kids or us any aggression. One of my daughters did get mauled by a labrador when she was 6 years old for no reason he just attacked her. So, any dog has it in it's nature to attack, they are wild animals and very unpredictable.
A lot of people that posted are just ignorant. Pitbulls are not the animals people try to make them out to be. They act according to how they are raised and this is with any animal.
As a previous owner of pit bulldogs, I have seen that it is the owner who has the responsibility of how the dog is raised. If it is secluded from people, it will attack. But when raised around children and people, they are lovable animals that protect their domain from other animals. It was very brave for George to prevent the children from being harmed.
Although I agree with some of the posters that the owner makes the animal, some breeds are more "protective or territorial" than others. As past owner of a Rottweiller(which by the way also get a bum rap)I can attest to that. "General" was 120 lbs of sweetness, he never met anyone he didn't like, especially kids. He even got along with our cats, but he was exposed to "the world" since he was a puppy. He wasn't aggressive to anyone, he only growled once at the neighbor's son because he grabbed my youngest daughter by the arm. Right now I am proud owner of a Jack Russell Terrier, Jackie, who at only 12lbs. will take a stand if anyone or anything "invades her territory". I know that she also will give her life to protect her family of two humans, one cat and a "pound puppy".
I have never heard anything good about any Pitbulls. I have neighbors that have two in their fenced in yard and I get the creeps driving by there. I know if they had the chance they would attack my pommies which ride in my bike basket everyday. These dogs do have a bum rap but, also a large history of attack. Everytime I read of a dog attack in a houston paper, pitbulls are involved. Some people may defend them, but, I think people who own pitbulls need to take a course in raising their animals and the dogs also need to pass a obedience class and they should be registered like Sex offenders.
You know, what is missing in this story is why the owner of the pits was allowing his dogs to run loose. A pit on a leash can make a really good neighbor, but any breed of dog running free may be a risk to his community. The worse rep the breed carries, the more responsible the owner needs to be. First train the owner, then train the dog.
George was a hero. It's a very sad and unfortunate loss.
We live across the street from some people who have a pit bull they rescued from some shelter. They have one of those underground electric fences, which does nothing to stop their pit bull from terrorizing people who ride bikes or walk their dogs down our street. The pit bull will cross the fence line and the electric color does nothing to stop it. I myself have even been bitten once on the ankle by their pit bull. Luckily the owner was around to stop the attack. The dog is inside the their house most of the time, but I have now witnessed 4 separate attacks, including my own, in the last 3 months. All attacks were against people trying to protect their own pets from this vicious animal while walking them past that yard.
I hate this dog and would happily kill it myself if there were not laws against that. Don't get me wrong, I love all animals - so much so that I would kill this one to prevent further attacks on other animals and their owners. It's only a matter of time before one of these attacks ends in unfortunate loss, like George.
I do not mean to devalue the objectivity of the news. But I am yet to see a report on a dog attack, involving pitbulls, that has a picture of the perpetrators. I have seen people calling one of my dogs a pitbull, when he is a doberman/lab mix. Just because hi is muscular and medium size. And I had a pitbull that was the sweetest thing in the world. I see pitbulls at the dog park all the time, and they show no signs of aggression. While some other common breeds, like labradors and border collies get in all kind of trouble. I have a neighbor with a ?vicious? (I called it vicious because it barks a lot, and is not friendly at all!) jack rusell terrier, and a chocolate lab that is pretty scary down the block. So, I really wander if all this so call pitbulls are really pitbulls. I have seem aggressive pits before, and yeah they are scary and very powerful, just like any other large breed.
If you are a pet owner, be responsible socialize your dog. Also, be respectful of others; keep your dog on a leash if he is out of your backyard. Put him inside your house if he is barking and disturbing the peace.
The problem with "pit bulls" is in the tenacity of their attack. They do not stop until the victim is dead and even then they will continue to attack with jaws locked and vicious shaking.
It's not how they are raised, but what they are geneticaly bred to do. This is no fault of the dog, of course. I shudder every time I see one or two on the prowl in the streets. These dogs are diffent from other dogs because they do not react to the usual submission signs displayed by other dogs (such as rolling over and presenting the abdomen). There have been studies on fatal dog attacks. Pit bulls and rottweilers are responsible for 60% of the fatal dog attacks in the US. Please do your research. Start with the website of Richard Polsky, Ph.D.,CAAB, an animal behaviorist in Los Angeles. He has a wonderful website, with an in-depth section on vicious dogs.
This is to all the IDIOTS who say its in a pitts breeding. Anybody who knows the breed knows its not their nature to be agressive because of breeding it IS in the way their raised they were not bred to fight but to herd cattle. I've owned numerous pitts and they were all babies, loyal to my family, and protective of my family BECAUSE of how their bred. If you're one of the IDIOTS who say its in their breeding you have to say a doberman is worse than a pitt because they we're bred to KILL case and point see ADOLF HITLER. You need to make sure the dogs in question are PURE bred or half breed mutts bred to fight or treated in a way to make them agressive, just because a dog is said to be a pitt doesn't always make it so. As for the people in favor of the Breed Selective Legislation you got part of it right B.S.L. is B.S. and all real true bred pitt owners need to speak up and quit letting this go on.
Pitbulls were bred to be aggressive toward animals for the purpose of bull baiting and dog fighting. They were also bred to not be aggressive towards people because the owner had to be able to handle a pitbull while in a pit with them during a fight with out being bitten. I bet these to were not attacking the children but just running up to them then got into it with the Jack Russell, which is also dog aggressive alot of the times. This is true for all terrier breeds to some extent. Because these were two pit bulls , they were "marauding". I have a shepherd mix, a boxer, and a pit. They all get along. I also have a 4 year old girl. They are all great to her and will protect her. My pitbull also does great at the dog park.
This is just media ignorance. Pitbulls were bred to be animal aggressive for the purpose of bull baiting and dog fighting. They were also bred to be very people friendly so their owner could get into a confined space with them while they were fighting with out being bitten. I bet they were not attacking the children, but just running up to them. Then they got into it with the Jack Russell, which are also animal aggressive as with all terriers.Because they were pitbulls, they were "marauding". Had it been a lab, it would have been an escaped pet. I have a boxer, a german shepherd and a pitbull that all get along great as well as a 4 year old girl. They are very gentle with her and will protect her.
