Pet food recall has owners worried UPDATED

UNION, N.J. -- Silviene Grzybowski became worried when her local pet store pulled the food she normally feeds her cat and posted an announcement saying it, and many other popular pet foods, had been recalled. Her cat, Smokey, hadn't been eating for days.

A major pet food recall affects both dog and cat food across North America.
"The vet told us to buy her her favorite food, but I’m going to call the vet right now," Grzybowski said.

Menu Foods, the Ontario, Canada-based company that produced the pet food, said Saturday it was recalling dog food sold throughout North America under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba. The food was distributed by major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

An unknown number of cats and dogs had suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, the company said.

Two other companies -- Nestle Purina PetCare Co. and Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. -- said Saturday that as a precaution they were voluntarily recalling some products made by Menu Foods.

The links to "Menu Foods" do not seem to work and I can not get anyone to answer any of the phone numbers - they are either busy or "technical difficulties" message. I have yet to hear anything about what to do if your pet has eaten this food and is experiencing the symptoms. I had already taken my dog to the vet because of the symptoms (about 2 weeks ago) and she was diagnosed with Kidney problems BEFORE this recall. We had fed her several pouches of the recalled food (we had some left and checked the UPC Codes). We have discontinued feeding her the food, but she is still not herself. I would like to take her back to the vet, but want to make sure that they give her the proper treatment. Can't anyone get the manufacturer to comment on this?

My parents cat died from eating Science Diet food, back the week of Valentines Day..we took her to the vet, who said she was in renal failure, of unknown cause and spent nearly $300 on vet bills. She was infused with IV liquids, came home, but once she was put back on her regular diet of Science Diet, she started with the symtpoms of vomiting, thirst, lethargy and died a week later. It is very unfortunate that it took so long for the company to realize this problem. So many people have lost their beloved pets.

two things

1. I have to commend texas city in passing the ordinance banning dogs being kept on chains , It really does make a dog mean. how about we put some owners on chains and see how they like it. when will harris county pass the same law?

2. thanks for the info on the dog food recall.

thanks

The public needs to visit their local independent convinent stores and check for recalled pet food on the shelves. I continue to find recalled pet food on the shelves and management says they did not get the recall info and/or do not want to lose the $$$ since the independent stores usually buy the products from wholesale stores and bought them prior to the recall.

Never fed canned dog or cat food to my pets. never have and never will.

Dry only. I buy fresh human food and cook it for them. i.e. rice add it to the dry, smoked ham hocks (already smoked, just open package and give it to them., inexpensive hamburger meat (cook it and put it over dry food). Cook chicken / beef livers, (yuK) pour over dry food. The dogs love it and can smell it cooking. Talk about waiting at attention.

Like the news reports said, they is little FDA oversight in canned pet food business. I just follow my own good instincts and not listen to the advertising hype.

Yes, this is alittle more effort than just opening a can, but this effort goes a long way between me and my pets.

My cat, Lexie, started showing all the symptoms associated with the recalled pet food two weeks before the recall. I took her to the vet on the Tuesday before the recall and he performed the blood tests and determined kidney failure and recommended only Hills Prescription Science Diet "K/D" foods from now on. Lexie won't eat this food, so to prevent her from starving to death I am giving her a little "Fancy Feast" canned food - all that she will eat, which isn't much.

The website listed the food I had been using - pouches of WalMart's Select Kitty food. I still have about 12 pouches left and talked to the people at WalMart and they indicated that they would refund my money. But when I asked about the $128 vet bill and the $15.00 "special diet food" they said to contact a lawyer.

The vet said Lexie may or may not live. She has lost about half of her body weight and her fur is now dull rough and she is pulling out tufts of it. The vet also said that he couldn't "prove" that the recalled cat food is what made her ill. Guess he doesn't want to get involved in any legal issues.

For now, I am spending all the quality time I can with Lexie. She may not be with me much longer. I will really miss her when she is gone. Thanks Menu Foods for not answering the phone or helping with information on what to do for this illness.

my dog had to be put to sleep last friday. She had eaten some Nutro natural choice pouches and became sick. I took her to the vet where she was diagnosed with severe renal failure. She endured a week of IV fluids and lost so much wait. She had been a spunky dog but got so weak she would just sit there because that's all she had energy for. Contacted menu foods and they said it might be a week or more before someone contacts me. These people should be held responsible for all this.

I have a cocapoo who had been eating pedigree can soft food for a year and about 8 weeks ago she was getting real sick and having trouble urinating. We took her to the emergency room and they took x-rays and found out she had stones the size of small plums in her bladder and had to have emergency surgery. When they took them out I put them in a jar and it was unreal the size of them in a small dog. She weighs 23 pounds. And I wonder if it had anything to do with the food I was feeding her. I switched her over to Mighty Dog. It cost us $2,000 to have her taken care of. Has anyone out there ever had that problem with their pets? If so would you please E-mail me at Defalconner@aol.com Thank you very much.

We feed our two Beagles, Science Diet Light dry,and Science Diet canned, along with Oral Care
Our cat is fed Science Diet K/D dry, is there any
problem with any of the aforementioned. We are about ready to make our own food for the animals, and not have to deal with any recall possibilities. If anything should happen to them
we would not be able to handle it very well.

March 10th, 2007 I bought a new bag of Hill's Science Diet Adult small bites...Which she had always eaten... March 29th, 2007 I had to have "Princess" my almost 12 year old Poodle put to sleep...She started drinking 8/20 oz bottles of water in a 24 hour period..
Her sugar level was 605 and her Ketone level were uncontrolable...March 9th she was perfectly healthy otherwise...I hope those bastards pay for what happened to her..

Last night KHOU TV said Purina had added more of their pet foods to the recall list. I can`t find them on the internet. We feed our cat Fancy Feast canned food and Deli-Cat dry food. Are either of these on the recall list?
