Pet food recall expanded to include dry food

Hill's Pet Nutrition recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food Friday. The food included wheat gluten from the same supplier that Menu Foods used. The recall didn't involve any other Prescription Diet or Science Diet products, said the company, a division of Colgate-Palmolive Co.

Meanwhile, federal testing of recalled pet foods turned up a chemical used to make plastics but failed to confirm the presence of a cancer drug also used as rat poison. The recall expanded Friday to include the first dry pet food.
The Food and Drug Administration said Friday it found melamine in samples of the Menu Foods pet food involved in the original recall and in imported wheat gluten used as an ingredient in the company's wet-style products. Cornell University scientists also found melamine in the urine of sick cats, as well as in the kidney of one cat that died after eating some of the recalled food.
FDA was working to rule out the possibility that the contaminated wheat gluten could have made it into any human food. However, melamine is toxic only in high doses, experts said, leaving its role in the pet deaths unclear.

We feed our cats Science Diet "lite" for adult cats. I hope this isn't included on the recall list? According to the info above it was just for: Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food

i can't beleive a "special diet" is bad. isn't that why it's "special"? i've had many cats on this and it's bad? god forbid our diabetic cats..

Our family's cat died about 3 YEARS ago; we fed her Iams, Eukanuba, Pet Science diet (all in the food recall list) which her vet recommended. She had every symptom (stopped eating, vomiting, ect.)
She got sick from one day to the next, the vet figured it was her kidneys, and there was not much we could do.

Whether this is a coincidence or not, I can't help to think this has been happening for years and the reason my cat died was for something I fed her. Nonetheless, I thank the media for taken this issue serious and just as important as any news.

Alpo canned dog food has now been added to the list of recalled food. The codes on the bottom of the affected prime cuts varietys are 7037-7053 followed by a factory code of 1159. Best by date of Feb-2009. This recall was just listed this morning 3-31-2007

I don't see a list of all the brands of dog food that have been found to be contaminated. Where is that found?

Aren't Melamine and Formaldehyde components in styrofoam? In the eighties I worked in a Pet Store and they had a hush-hush recall of a major food and a pet supplies distributor said that those companies used rejected meat for human consumption and put it in the mix, still wrapped in plastic and on the styrofoam trays. I wonder if anyone could investigate this I am guessing this might have something to do with the recall. Recalls aren't new, but they are being exposed now and that is good because our pets deserve protection from potentially harmful substances.

How is it serving the public interest if you have to register before getting additional information on this recall? Save that for optional stories. This is a matter of life and death. Don't try to hook us into your site and then give us a blind alley unless we are registered for your website.

I am really concerned as to what is safe to feed my dog. I have always taken good care of my dog and want him to live a long and happy life with me. It is time for me to buy more dog food.
I don't know if I should. Maybe I should just start feeding him what I eat..At least I'll know that he is relatively safe/

I logged on to find out specifically what dry cat food is dangerous. I cannot seem to find the info even though your newscaster said it was on your site. I tried to sign in to become a member to get the info and keep getting an error message. You should make this information easier to find.

My gorgeous cat would have been 3 today. Last Monday he was lethargic but I didn't think much of it, Tuesday he was vomiting, rushed him to the ER vet where he died of renal failure. He had been fed only Science diet since birth with sometimes a Friskies(made by Purina), urinary type food mixed in, thought I was protecting him. His death hasn't been reported, so don't think "only" 16 cats have died, there are thousands out there, unreported. My other cat who eats Friskies & Purina because she doesn't like Science Diet, is near death at the vet right now. I can't find the list of the 42 recalled cat foods, so I am down to feeding my last cat cooked chicken & turkey. What is the public suppsoed to feed their cats?

donna said:

This is very serious business and it should not be this hard to obtain information

I logged on because I heard on the news that more pet foods are now involved. I was most disappointed to find that I couldn't access this "so-called list" which news personnel on KHOU were talking about. Please don't promise something supposedly available when it is not.

Charlotte said:

I was trying to get that list of recalled pet food but as I see so have many others I feed my cats Purina and so far I've been lucky but I still would not like to take chances with my little girls so if there is a recent lists of recalled pet food and the lists just keep growing why don't the stores look at all their pet food to see which ones have any of those dangerous poisons in them and jerk every last one off the shelves and return to the manufactor that made it or over to the FDA and I think that whom ever started putting that poisons into pet supplies should be arrested because they are killing way to many pets. We get fined if someone found being creul to their pets so why can't the person or persons be held responcable for this and pay a huge fine plus pay everyone that has lost their babies because they ate that food plus spend at least 10 to 20 in prison for what he/she has done.

Where is the complete list?

I am trying to find out if Beggin Strips, Pedigree and Kimbles and Bits are still safe to feed my dog. She is not sick at the present that I can tell, but I don't want to continue to expose her to something that could be a ticking bomb for her. Please advise with a list of bad stuff or simply an answer to my question via e-mail.
thanks so very much.

Debbie said:

Its quicker just to go to the website of the company for the cat or dog food you have. Just look on the bag or can and they should list their website address. They usually will have info there about the recall. Goodlife pet foods is safe. Also any purina foods other than the one they mentioned on the news is safe according to their website.

I have a cat and a puppy. Now I am a little confused with the list. I have checked the first list that was posted back when this first started, but where is the new list. Now with the dry food added, I feel everything is unsafe. We have to think now if the recall started with wet foods and so many brand names, then now with the dry food, it is unsafe. I have not noticed any illness in neither of my animals, but it is scary and what should pet owners do now?

Dora said:

My Siamese/Calico mix cat George will be 15 yrs old this Friday April 6. For the past 3 wks we have been taking him to the vet sometimes daily for IV feeds (@ $80/day) & giving him bags of fluid @ home ourselves. Blood in the urine was the first symptom, but now he is lethargic, not eating & not drinking. DRs say it is Kidney failure w/ a bacterial infection. He was raised on Purina Cat Chow dry & 9-Lives canned by Del Monte. I heard one segment that said Del Monte has now been included in the recall but not the canned food. I have not been able to confirm this yet. We are considering for his birthday of putting him out of his misery. I have already purchased a coffin.

Even though I've been a CH 11 news watcher for MANY years I think I'm Now switching to CH 26.
Your morning news inferred that a list of the dry pet foods would be posted on your web siteI couldn't find it and by reading the comments of others they couldn't either. This is as important a story to many of us as child preditors is. Our pets ARE our children too!
Don't trease us and NOT DELIVER. You are waisting our precious time!!!!!
Won't be seeing you later!

This is scary business!! What exactly are we suppose to be feeding our pets. Luckily my dogs are fine, but I am afraid to feed them anything. My 2 poodles are every thing to me. I would be devasted if anything happened to them. It would be nice if we could get a complete list that is easy to find. This is serious and it would make everyone's life easier if we could get to the list faster and easier.

Seems this one is going to cost you a few viewers. I came here for the same reason everyone else did, and have come to the same conclusion...WHERE'S THE LIST?
Mom just lost her dog so sudden unexplained renal failure. My girlfriend just called me to say she keeps getting an error message while trying to get information from your site about the recall, our dogs are out of food, and now I'm wasting time with this instead of going to the store.
WHAT KIND OF FOOD IS SAFE?
Now I have to find a responsible source for news and information. Goodbye KHOU.com

Barbara said:

Comments to KHOU...the other stations do not require visitors to log in...this requirement makes your site very unfriendly to use. Perhaps you could re-evaluate this policy?

I understand people's frustration at this situation. I lost my cat of almost 11 years ago a week ago, Saturday, as a result of this.

However, I don't think it's right to place blame on KHOU for not having the list, which in fact they do have linked to every article they've posted about this story.

In fact, if you click the link above, right after the article, the one that says 'click for more details', the article that opens has the links to the recalled cat and dog foods in the blue box. The main page of this website still has an article about the recall, that does in fact have the same links to the lists.

The people at fault in this are Menu foods and the people who made the decision to use the manufacturer that produced the tainted food, then when finding out about this, tested their animals, many of whom died, and still did not alert anyone. When they did - they didn't even have a list together. I am still very angry and extremely upset at the loss of my cat, whom I loved so much, but I am trying to focus my anger and angst at the right people, not the ones trying to help us get the information we need.

this is not a help line, nor a question answer forum. It is a place where information relevant to animals is posted and the community comments. For those of you needing answers, go to the menu foods website and find the numbers to call there or call your vet or a local pet store who have the information.

Here's what I'm doing: I am reading the ingredient list on every single flavor of wet cat food that I buy. I stood in HEB's pet aisle for thirty munutes at least yesterday reading all the labels. If it has wheat gluten I don't buy it. I do see that all the dry food has it; but Purina's are OK. I have stopped feeding treats.

Good luck with your furry babies. I am giving sub-Q fluids to mine, she is now eating again on her own. Vet bill now up to $600.

Channel 11 did better last night but they still said "go to the website" Sunday night. I don't have internet at home so I went "straight to CNN" and learned it was the Pounce treats! Now why couldn't your anchor spend 5 seconds saying that????

I am feeding Fancy Feast (flavors that do NOT have wheat gluten only!) read the cans. Purina One
is OK, bought Goodlife and new Purina Naturals last night.

And, my kitty is going to make it, now. Good luck everyone. Just be careful. If the companies had bought the wheat from our American farmers who need the money we wouldn't be having this problem.

I believe these Major Pet Food company's should combine all of their test results and post a Nat'l website to report "ALL" of the brands of foods that are contaminated.
Who know's "what" we are to feed our animals as every week, new brands are being recalled (our's Purina)and it's quite difficult to try and KEEP UP with what's being reported on TV.....
Our 11yr old Black lab has not been feeling well, and since our BRAND was not on the recall list until Sat. 31st when (Purina put out it's 1st Press Release) We could have been feeding her contaminated food ALL this time and didn't know until today, April 2nd....
PROVIDE A NAT'L WEBSITE WITH "ALL" BRANDS TESTED AND FOUND CONTAMINENTS FOR ALL PET OWNERS!!

I said "Goodbye Khou.com" yesterday. I came back to see what you have done to "fix" the problem since reading all the negative feedback.
The links you now provide appear to actually link to relavent information WITHOUT HAVING TO LOG-IN. Kudos. If only that would have occurred yesterday, instead of tying up servers with tedious log-ins. I became upset about the 'wild goose chase'.
I believe the entire site should contain FREELY accessible information, if you are going to steer everyone from the 'sketchy-Headline-News-style' morning newscast, to your website.
I found CNN's list searching 'class-action' and 'Menu foods' in one click...no log in, no wasting time.

Paula said:

I have to agree with other comments regarding the "log-in" issue. It is most annoying to want to read a short article but get that darn message to "sign-up"....and your newscast have gone to the dogs (no pun intended)...I'm so tired of the "look at me, I'm cute" news anchors who have about as much personality as a dishrag and deliver the news in a "bland" manner. I, also, have switched news stations after many years of being a devoted Channel 11 fan. I guess nothing lasts forever....

Gina, thanks for putting all the recalled brands out there for us!! I too am praying for all the sick furbabies - and grieve with everyone who has already lost a family member! Someone said it already, but if Menu (or any other company) had not purchased the ingredients from China, but from our own country, then we would probably not be having this crisis!!!!!!!!!!

go to your local grocery store, buy a whole chicken, bake it, peel all the meat off the bone & add some rice to it. you can add fresh veggies, too. we use broccoli & carrots.
mix in some ground beef if you'd like.
***just NO POTATOES,CABBAGE or GARLIC***(will make them sick)
MY DOGS LOVE IT- it's all natural. just as long as they don't recall chickens!!

I have cats and dogs and I am very concerned as to what to feed my animals. I had heard this morning that Dingo treats for dogs had salmonella in them. I had bought my dog one over the weekend-gave it to her Saturday night and she has had diarrhea since. Called my vet and asked them what to do and they said to give her Kaopectate--hope this works. Had been feeding her nutro diet dry food--saw that neutro was on the list-does anyone know if the neutro dry was on the list or was it just canned foods. Had been using old roys canned dog food and special kitty canned foods from Walmart. Changed my cats to 9 lives and my dogs to only dry food by nutro.

call your vet & get the HILLS RX food- It will cost you more, but isn't your pet worth it?
I pay $45 for a 20 lb bag. (you get what you pay for)

Some of Hills RX DOES NOT contain wheat glutten.
My 9 year old Lab eats the HILLS W/D (no wheat glutten). She very healthy & spunky for an lil ol lady!
Good luck to all of you dealing w/ this horrible issue.

grace said:

I'm so sorry for all of you that suffered through the loss of a pet. I fault Menu foods for getting their ingredients from China. Why not buy from America? So it may cost more to produce the food, but I bet Americans are willing to pay more if it will insure that our pets are safe.

Grace

KEEP IT IN AMERICA!!!

I checked the recall list today and to answer Mary M. on the Nutro dog food....it shows Nutro Max, Nutro Natural Choice, & Nutro. It does not specify canned or dry. Hope this helps. I have 2 dogs myself and I am so scared what to give them. I had a Rottweiler pass away in 2005 from cancer. He just stopped eating one day. It was so sudden. I took him to the vet & bought special food from her and then put him on an IV to help save him. No miracle was in his future. I don't ever want to go thru that again with my loved ones.

If your vet sells Hills products (Science Diet), do not take any nutrition advice from them. Contrary to what I thought at first, there are few veterinarians who are dog nutrionists. Many veterinarians are offered incentives when they sell Science Diet or other commercial pet foods in their clinics. There are only a handful of vets, that are willing to give up these incentives and tell you the truth about the dog food industry. Science Diet, and any other commercial pet food (Iams, Eukanuba, Purina, etc..) are lower quality foods. Question the objectivity of any vet in the news or other that tell you otherwise.

Do not buy any commercial pet foods,'premium' foods are almost as bad as any grocery brand dog food. The commercial dog food industry has made gazillions of money turning their production waste into dog food, and selling this at a ‘premium’ price. Advertising and the media, controlled by the corporate giants such as Proctor and Gamble (Iams), Colgate-Palmolive (Hills Pet Nutrition), and Heinz (9 lives, Kibbles –n-bits) are key players, and cover up that the dog food industry is really an extension of the human food and agriculture industries. Anything that the pet food distributor does not add to the food themselves, does not have to be put on the label.

Do not trust dog food labels. They tell you to look at the first five ingredients, and if the first one is a meat such as ‘chicken’ or ‘lamb’ then it is supposed to be good. It is not. There are many contrived rules to pet food labeling, ingredients are listed in order of their weight. It takes hours to understand how to properly read a label. For example, According to US Coast Guard regulations Fish Meal not destined for human consumption has to be preserved with ethoxyquin, but since this comes from the distributor, you won’t find it on the final label.

The safest thing you can do for your pet, is to switch to an organic food that guarantees they only use human-grade ingredients. Then supplement that with home-cooked ingredients and meats. Contact a dog nutritionist to get a consultation for your dog- you can get this done for under $50. You will save on vet bills in the end.

My cat Kiki died at 6AM Easter morning after being diagnosed with kidney failure on 3/30. He had been eating dry Iams cat food. I hope the makers of the pet food companies pay dearly for what they have done to all of us pet owners that have a lost a love one. We did everything we could for him even gave him the IV treatments at home but. He put up a fight to live and lost. We are very heartbroken and nothing will ease the pain we are suffering. We share everyones pain that have lost a loved furry companion.

I have been feeding my dog the same Science Diet Light food for 2 years. He is a very healthy dog and hasnt had any problems before. My biggest fear is not his actual dog food, but the treats I feed him. I have checked recall lists and it seems every site has a different list. Does anyone know where I can find a list that has EVERYTHING listed? The treats I have are by Grreat Choice .. the biscuits... but they expire 09/07 and that is not listed in the recall list here, but I did see somewhere that these were on the list?? At this point, I have a very expensive family member that I want to take the best care of that I can... and I cant seem to find the information needed to protect him and it is very frustrating.

The general public does not understand that our pets are like people... they are family members just like our parents, our kids, etc. These family memeber should be taken care of just like the rest.

My dog ate out dates IAMS sold by Big Lots from China. First he began vomiting and rectal blood clots. Big Lots blames Iams. Iams blames Big Lots, however, there was wheat gluten and all is now being recalled. He has been in ICU twice now. The second food switched was sold by the vet. Now this too is being recalled. He has different symptoms and I can only hope someone out there has the same symptoms to bring into light for other pet owners. He has a failing pancreas with bacteria. Second time 11 days later is his colon. He is not drinking water. After IV and Antibiotics in ICU he stops passing blood clots, but now must go on IV at home (SQ Fluids). I only make him home cooked meals and he is beginning to fall back again. Try cooking your own chicken, pea's, beef liver, chicken liver and green beans. Blend it well with a lot of water and use 1/2 pound per 20 pound dog. To get him to drink water I have puree green beans and mix with water only. It can be frozen. I give him nothing made by any pet food company anymore and can only hope this new diet will not spread to his Kidneys. They claim he is a "Special Case" how many "Special Cases are out there and not being reported? Freeway is only 3 and in perfect health until he ate the IAMS from Big Lots who should be to blame as well for selling out dated food. Good Luck.
