Pet food maker announces huge recall

WASHINGTON -- A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.
“At this juncture, we’re not 100 percent sure what’s happened,” said Paul Henderson, the company’s president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.
The recall covers the company’s “cuts and gravy” style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.
Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738.
The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.
Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.
“To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product,” Henderson said.
The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.
Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.
Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million.

It would be nice of your company to get the correct
name of the products involved for dogs, rather than
wait a few days like you have done. What dog products are being recalled. Someone said MightyDogPouches and I do have 40 packs of this product. How can I tell if this is the one that is bad before it kills my dog. You are waisting our time by waiting till Saturday even if youpost it then Please reply asap

Please get a full list of products out ASAP. My dog and all my cats are at risk and I am worried sick. Thank you!

Yes on the FDA site there are some letters of recalland Might Dog Was Listed and the code numbers and plant numbers are on the recall notice.
Our dog was eating this food, he died Thur. of kidney failure. The vet is checking it out and we have already called the manufacture.

Bob said:

Bob again, i didn't mean he was eating the mighty dog food, he was eating another one listed on the list.

I have fed my cats Wal-Mart's Special Kitty (canned & pouches) for years, as well as Ol Roy pouches to my dogs. On March 7th, I rushed one of my cats to the Vet, where he died with kidney failure. this past Friday, March 16th, I rushed another cat to the Vet with the same symptoms. He is in kidney failure with a very guarded prognosis. He is still there (3/18/07). I am very upset and worried about my other cats and dogs. I have a list of numbers and dug cans & pouches out of the trash to check them. However, the numbers on the posted list and the number sequences on the cans have no relation to each other. The pouches don't have any numbers. What are we supposed to check? This is very frustrating. The dates only state..."Best if used by...". That does not tell the actual date, per the list of contaminated cans/pouches. This needs to be clarified and made easier for consumers to understand and check. PLEASE... help us, our family members are dying!!! Thank you. Please reply ASAP with information that makes better sense.

I live in Texas. I have 4 dogs and a cat. I feed them ol roy canned food and special kitty canned and pouched food to my cat.

A few weeks ago our black labs belly started swelling and I was very concerned my husband and I could'nt figure out what was wrong until this recall happened. Well, it gets even beter - I googled walmart dog food recall - guess what it is another recall on ol roy back on June 2006 the company Simmons Pet Food initiated a voluntary withdrawal from wal-mart. They said the affected products are being removed from wal-mart shelves. But, they did'nt get all of those ol roy cans my dog Gieger did and my other 3 dogs did. I have receipts from Jan,Feb 2007 with the upc codes and they match the recall from Simmons Pet Food.
Everybody on this message board google walmart dog food recall and google dog food recall.

Email me linkstar@samlink.com

I am so sorry to hear about ya'lls pets!

I had a italian greyhound that I believe died from eating pets pride dog food sold at Kroger.
He got sick very quick, lathargic and died on March 8, 2007. When euthanized by the vet he was very anemic suggesting kidney failure. I do not have the cans of food anymore. How do I prove the dog food killed my dog? I lost my best friend. If you call menu foods you get a busy signal or another # to call. What can I do?Gwenn

We had a boxer bull he was a great pet for kids everyone loved him very much , about three week ago we start to see a changed in him he wentfrom a adhd dog jumping every where to hardly able to walk he was swollen up so bad under his neck and his stomach area so bad he look like he put on 75 pounds .As his owner we are on a fix income we call the vet. we use here in cleveland ,but by the time the vet. could call us back our bo was dead our 10 year grandbaby girl found him when she went to pet him .this all form buying dog food from wal-mart oroy dry dog food; this is not fair it not right I think that some one owes me a male boxer bull.from your company because we nolonger have our pet due to walmarts neglace if you are this neglectful with animal food i will not buy food products from your company because you are neglectful

trish cooper said:

is this recall specific to the canned or pouched foods? after reading the one from cleveland, she mentioned that her dog was on the ol'roy DRY dog food??? is this true?

suzanne said:

We use dry Old roy Kibbles and Bits plus the red old roy soft pouches. Our collie has been lethargic for the past three days. Are the red box pouches dangerous as well as the dry Old Roy Klbbles and Bits? Is it a matter of purchasing date?

Kathy said:

I am so sorry for those of you that have lost pets or have sick pets. All the food mentioned is nothing but garbage food. It would be similar to feeding your family out of a dumpster.

Kathy said:

I forgot to respond to the post from "Almetta", who lost her boxer and feels Menu Foods owe her a dog! If I lost my little Rainbow from bad food, there is not a person or a company that could REPLACE her. 09/17/05 I lost the sister of Rainbow from a grooming accident. If the groomer had said "I will give you another dog" I would have said "NO". The entire food chain is constantly at risk. Our pets are no different. Again, I am sorry for your lose. I have been there but in another way. But it still hurts after almost 2 years.

I had female Minature Doberman who was very picky when it came to food unfortunatly her favorite was ol roy pouches. She is now dead, I had her since i was 16 i am now 23. She wasnt just my pet she was like my child, everytime i think of her i start crying. I knew something was with her b/c she had lethargic and had bloody stool. I took her to the vet, and spent a lot of money trying to figure out what was wrong with her lil did i know, i was killing her. I cant believe that the biggest and richest company in the world did this to millions of their loyal customers. Someone owes us something "im sorry" doesnt take the pain and guilt away!

PAUL said:

Our black lab (KELLY) we think was infected by bad dog food. She got so sick, then after a month of throwing up, we had to take her out of her pain, so we choise to put her down. At the end she had stopped eating all together. The last 3 days stopped drinking. We had her for 8 years and fed her nothing but dry food. NITRO isn't on the list!!! Is it more dog food then what they are telling us??? I would not be suprised. Today we pick up her ashes from the vet, she was to young to die, only 8 years old. She was the best dog we every had, she is missed.

We have lost our part border collie. She was only 4 she had eaten Oroy dry and treats all her life. My 10 year old when out to love on her and give her a treat and found her dead. She had gotten to where she wasn't eating and we had plan to take her to the vet the next day. My point is we buried her in the yard. We didn't have the money to take our dead dog to the vet for testing. So, my dog will never be in the so called offical numbers.

I started feeding my dog (Princess)Ol Roy dry food a couple of months ago. She is now dead of kidney failure. Please e-mail me if your dog became sick from this food. They have not recalled this food yet. How many animals have to die before they do.

Today my black lab started vomiting blood. That is how i ended up here. He eats old roy dry dog food and the old roy dog bones. My cat is also passing blood in her stool. She ate the dry special kitty also from walmart. Now i'm scared to feed them anything. They are both drinking lots of water. That was the first sign. My cat also jumped on the kitchen table at dinner time, which was very unusual. She never liked table food before and now she wants anything but cat food. What do we feed our animals now?

I recently got a puppy on easter for my 16 month old son. He was fine and healthy for 3 weeks, buddy (our dog) and my son would chase each other around the house and play for hours. Just this week we bought ol' roy puppy food for him and less then 2 days he started eating it he became extremely ill, vomiting and had bloody dihaerra, within 24 hours he became lathargic and died. We thought it was Parvo but the vet said that it wasnt. It was kidney failure. I didn't even know there was a recall on ol' roy dog food products. I watch the news every morning and at night and heard no such thing. I will never use any ol' roy products ever again.. I think it is the companies reponsability to make sure there recall is known to all customers, wether it is by flyers or a comercial. My son crys everyday know because his best friend is no longer here and it breaks my heart to know that i am the one that KILLED him. I am not asking for anything from anyone except that you need to be more clear when products do start going bad and let your customers know.

I have a 6 year old Rotty and 5 Shi-tzus. I have been feeding them Maxximun(Wal-Mart brand) and I have just realized my big dog has been dry vomiting since I have changed. I lost a 6month shi-tzu but can not be certain it was from the dry food or from the posionous treats I was giving him. Is there any antidote?

I agree about the companies giving the public the knowledge of "name brands" that are effected....Last Saturday I watched our 13 yr old family pet die....I'll never forget how quick he deteriated!! I had only bought Ol Roy peanut butter treats the last couple of months...I never had bought Ol Roy before but, I was in Wal-Mart and saw the peanut butter flavor and thought "Max" might like them!!!! Little did I know that I would slowly be poisoning my pet!!! Not until a friend of mine told me she heard that Ol Roy treats had been recalled did I know anything about Ol Roy!!!I too threw all of them away immediately but, for "Max" it was too late...a week later he was dead!!! Yes, he was 13 but, I am convinced it was the treats...he vomited and was lathargic when we took him to emergency vet clinic where we were told he was in kidney failure...we had to make the decision to tell him good bye to get him out of his suffering!! It was heart breaking!!!!!!!!!

We need to demand that ALL NAME BRANDS be made known on every news station!!

I will tell everyone I can to NEVER buy Ol Roy ANYTHING!!!!
