Pit bulls attack SUV in search of cat

OAK CLIFF - We've all heard stories about pit bulls attacking people but have you ever seen one attack a SUV?

If you have ever doubted the power of a pit bull bite, Mitchell Stevens
has the proof on his SUV.

"It was very loud and very vicious," he said.

"The teeth marks went all the way through the wheel shroud - this is a
pretty thick shroud. If you put your hand under here you can see they
went all the way through."

Stevens encountered two full grown pit bulls attacking his SUV parked on
the driveway.

The dogs' teeth shredded two fenders and their claws scratched the paint
in an attempt to get to the family's cat who was hidden in the engine.

The cat survived but Stevens and his wife now fear if the dogs could do
this to an SUV, imagine what could happen to their son.

"They have the most incredible strength, I mean, what if this was
Mitchell outside playing," said Jillce Stevens.

The 3-year-old likes to play in his sandbox but now his parents don't
think he's safe.

"There's so many pitbulls in this neighborhood, that we're very scared
to have out kid come out." said Mitch Stevens.

This pit bull lives down the street.

It was behind a fence but Dallas animal control officers say two-thirds
of the 30,000 dogs and cats that they picked up last year were stray pit
bulls.

The Stevens have warned other parents in the neighborhood about what
happened to their SUV.

"I described the dogs in great detail, and said look in your neighbors'
back yard and watch out for them," Jillce Stevens said.

The pit bulls ran off and have not been seen since the attack.

State law prohibits cities from banning specific breeds of dogs.

But the Stevens would like city council members to consider harsher
penalties against dog owners whose dogs get loose.

Just what the world needs, more negative pitbull media. :-( How disappointing.

you know, I don't even like hearing a new story come on the news when it's about a pit bull. It's truely not the dog. It's the owner. Irresponsible owners (that call themselves "adults") are the Problem. I have a 2 year old Blue/Blue Fawn Pit and he is the most loving and smartest pet I have ever had. Granted, yes they are very powerful and they even look mean, but that's just the breed. I think they are very beautiful dogs. I hope that Texas never puts a ban on these dogs, which would be hard considering of all the "mix breeded pits" (once again, by irresponsible people).

These pit bulls are a loaded weapon. I have the same problem with pit bulls chained up with no one to feed them but once a week. I am so afraid for my grandchildren to even be outside my home.
Why do we have to live in fear in Waller County because there are no dog laws.
It is time for new laws. If there is anyone out there that can help us please do so.

Are we sure they were pitbulls, many times theres a misidentification of the breed involved when the individual has not ever really seen a true pitbull but bases their assumption on what breed the dog is based on media pictures od "pitbulls" that were really mixed breeds or another breed similiar in appearance. My ukc pit has been misintified as a boxer, bull dog, hootch dog. i get laughs when indentifying my adba pit-bull as a pitbull. people think she's a dalmation, terrier, or a mix of those with spaniel. The ukc was a gentle giant, the adba is a pound rescue abused dog-snall and unassuming with unimpressive jaw-yet she is actually the potentially dangerous dog. Pits are a reflection of how they were raised by their owner. Even an abused vicous pit can be tamed as is happening with mine. But there is never an excuse for any dog to be running loose, and no pitbull should be loose or left unsupervised in his yard-the resposibility of taking extra precautions when owning this type of dog are common sense and owners who fail to do so should be fined and their rights to ownership restricted. Punish the stupid humans and not the breed. Ban bad pitbull owners.

I agree with k.ewo. Check out the site and try to find the real APBT.

They are not loaded weapons, you said so yourself in the post then they are being chained up and fed once a week. THAT, my friend is the problem. Not the dogs.

So what do you do about vicious dogs? Yes, I had a pit and she was the nicest dog I've ever had, however; there is no excuse for pits that are vicious and would attack any human or man-made object in their way. I think there should be stiffer penalties for individuals who do not control their dog(s).

No dog, Pit Bull or otherwise, should be running loose and no cat should be either. "This time it was the SUV, next time it could be my child". Come on, let's be a little realistic!! These dogs were doing what dogs do, they were after a cat who should have been in the house where it would have been safe. There is a big difference between a dog going after a cat and a dog going after a kid. A dog chasing a cat is being a dog, a dog going after a kid is unstable and should be shot. Yes the owners of the dogs should be seriously fined for allowing their dogs to run loose and they should have to pay for the damages to the vehicle, but even considering a breed ban over this un-newsworthy incident is ludacris.

And to Joyce Bretcha, the problem with the Pit Bulls you are talking about needs to be reported to the authorities. They are being neglected and are suffering at the hands of HUMANS. And if something bad happens because of those dogs, the only ones to blame are the HUMANS, not an entire breed. You think Pit Bulls are "loaded weapons", so are HUMANS. People are just as unpredictable as any animal.

Michelle, what self respecting animal rights advocate supports shooting a pit? I guess a bullet is the cheapest solution and cheap is more important than humane to you? So chasing a cat with intention to kill is "dogs ... doing what dogs do"? Then in your convoluted world dogs and cats should never be allowed to live together? Is that realistic? Or is it that cats really don't matter to you? Also, you must be listening to too much rap music if this incident is "ludacris" rather than ludicrous. I think you're really a fighting pit breeder masquerading as a pit bull activist to make the rest of us look stupid and irrational.

FOR ALL THAT HAVE ENCOUNTERED A BAD PIT BULL EXPERIENCE; I AM SO SORRY. BUT I AS AN ANIMAL LOVER OF ALL KINDS AND OWNER OF PIT BULLS. I NEED TO SAY DON'T GO AFTER THE PIT BULL; GO AFTER THE OWNERS THAT MAKE THEM MEAN. IF PEOPLE REALLY DID THEIR HOME WORK; PIT BULLS ARE PEOPLE DOGS AND ARE BASICALLY BIG BABIES. THEY LIKE TO THINK THEY ARE LAP DOGS THAT YOU CUDDLE WITH. IT'S NOT THE DOG IT'S THE WAY THEY ARE RAISED. NOW YOU DON'T HEAR THE GOOD STUFF WHEN THEY SAVE A LIFE OR MAKE AN ILL PERSON OR CHILD FEEL BETTER. ALL YOU HEAR IS HORROR. I AGAIN AM SORRY FOR ALL THE INJURIES CAUSED FROM STUPID PEOPLE MAKING THESE DOGS MEAN. I CAN'T STOP THINKING OF HOW IF A PRODOMINATE RACE MAY CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS THAN ANOTHER RACE. WELL ARE YOU GOING TO BAN THAT TOO. HOW ABOUT BANNING SOME POLITICAL STUFF LIKE WAR, DISEASE AND HOW OLD PEOPLE MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR OUR GENERATION AND THEY ARE PUNISHED AND SIMPLY BANNED UNTIL THEY NO LONGER EXIST. STOP THE SOURCE; THE OWNERS OF THE DOG. HOLD THEM RESPONSIBLE.
MEET MY DOGS AND YOU WILL KNOW WHAT KIND OF LOVE AND GENTLE LOVE PIT BULLS ARE CAPABLE OF. ONCE AGAIN MY HEART GOES OUT TO THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED HORROR BECAUSE OF HEARTLESS DOG OWNERS

I know my sheltie or yorkie could never maul anyone to death even if they wanted to. First off, they both run under the couch when there is a knock on the door and won't come near you until they get to know you. That is a GENTLE BREED, no mistake about it. Second, if by some wild happenstance they did try to maul you, you could drop kick either one of them with almost no effort at all. They were truly bred to be companions and not fighting dogs like pit bulls. A pit bull could kill them without even trying and even chew through my fence to get to them as has been seen on the news. My dogs could never do that. It is not in them. They would never maul a small defenseless child like so many pit bulls do. My dogs don't even go near children until they get to know them and are very gentle with them once they do. I say outlaw or license pit bulls like we do wild dangerous animals that can and will kill you without thought but because it is their instinct.
