Crowds got a wild sex ed lesson in Crosby Wednesday when two eagles were spotted apparently mating in a tree.

The onlookers snapped photos of the sight with cell phone and digital cameras.
All afternoon, people gathered around the tree on Diamondhead Blvd. near Newport Elementary to see the eagles in action.
Thanks to Christy Maxwell who sent in the photos.

I don't believe that the eagles were mating. During the mating ritual the eagles soar, dive, loop, fly upside down and perform unbelievable maneauvers to attract each other. During this ritualistic courtship eagles have been know to plunge to their deaths. It appears that the eagles flew into the tree and became lodged in the branches and were unable to immediately extricate themselves. Once they had rested and released their hold on each other the flew away to continue the ritual in a more obscure setting.
It is unlikely that the eagles would have chosen the spot so close to the ground and to automobile and pedestrian traffic to continue the mating ritual.
Thank you for the great pictures and for caring about our endangered wildlife. I was among those who were privileged to see eagles in Crosby, Texas and will never forget the experience.

I agree with Mr. Brodd. They may be hung up in the tree, exhausted from grappling with each other aloft. They appear to be breathing hard (beaks are open)and, after all, it's embarassing for these magnificent creatures (and national symbols) to crash into a tree during courtship.
Seriously, it's really encouraging that the Bald eagle is doing so much better than 40 years ago.
