Pit Bull puppy chews off baby girl's toes

From the Associated Press:

BOSSIER CITY, La. -- A puppy chewed off four of a baby girl's toes next to her sleeping parents, who were then booked on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence, police said Monday.

Mary Shannon Hansche, 22, and Christopher Wayne Hansche, 26, told police they woke to the baby's cries, found her mangled foot and took her to the hospital early Sunday.

Police said that they were sleeping on a mattress and that the month-old girl was in an infant seat beside them when the 6 week old pit bull began chewing on her toes.

"They did not see the dog injuring the child," police spokesman Mark Natale said.

The puppy might have been trying to nurse on the toes of the baby, a veterinarian speculated.

"I know that sounds a little far-fetched, but that's the first thing that comes to my mind," Michael Dale said.

The girl underwent surgery Sunday in Shreveport. There was no way to reattach her toes, Natale said.

The puppy had no record of receiving shots and will be quarantined for 10 days while it is checked for rabies, officials said. Natale said he did not know what the animal's fate would be after that.

The child will be placed in a foster home until the case against her parents is settled, officials said.

My gosh,

I feel awful & sad for the little baby, BUT THIS WAS A 6 WEEK, 6 WEEK, 6 WEEK OLD PUPPY!

It was probably hungry and looking for food. It certainly did not do it out of visciousness!

Why does the headline NEED to mention that it was a Pit Bull??? IT WAS JUST A BABY, A TINY LITTLE PUPPY, just as helpless and depending on it's humas for safety, food and comfort.

The parents did not hear the baby scream, which I am sure it did????
They are to blame for this mess, not the human or the furry baby! The baby and the puppy will pay the price for their carelessness!

The baby will be a crippled foot and the furry baby will probably die because it is a Pit Bull, and yes, they are just so, so viscous even when only 6 weeks old.

Any responsible parent would have heard the baby crying unless they were in a drug or alcohol induced sleep. Its also possible they were not even in the same room as the baby or not even home at all. The child should not be put back in the parents custody.

Anyone who has raised any type of puppy knows that a puppy at 6 weeks old could not possibly chew off a babys toes. They have teeth, but at that age they aren't much, and they suck not chew becuase they are barely weined at that age. How do they know some rodent didn't come in and it? Sounds like the conditions maybe that where they weren't the best. Also why didn't the parents wake up and see what was happening if the baby was right next to them in a car seat? This poor puppy should not be condemed just because of poor parenting. This poor puppy shouldn't even have been in their hands at all at that age.

Why is the puppy being blamed if no one saw it doing anything? Oh that's right, whenever something goes wrong "the Pit Bull did it". How did the puppy manage to chew off 4 toes and run away before the parents woke up to the baby's cries?

Yet once again the whole story isn't being told and the dog gets the blame.

P.S., why was a 6 week old puppy taken away from it's mother and litter mates so early? Yet more negligence on the part of the parents and the idiot(s) who sold them such a young puppy.

The baby was abused by the parents, the puppy was abused by the parents too. They should be prosecuted for their actions!
This is not the first time I've heard of a puppy chewing on a human, years ago a mix lab chewed a paralyzed man as he slept, I don't remember it being such a big news topic back then, but then a PIT wasn't involved in that one!
I love Labs too, I'm just saying that they don't get the bad rap here, and that's the truth, they don't make the news headlines.
When I first heard this story here:
ttp://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/02/06/face.transplant/index.html
I had to go and read for awhile to find out what kind of dog chewed a woman's face completely off. The headlines did not read a LAB did it, I had to go and read and find it in the story............Why is it that I had to read for quite awhile to find it?
I really believe the name is so notorious for the Pit Bull that they love to use it in the headlines, everyone does. I'm sorry for them, as sorry as I am for that abused little baby girl who isn't going to have an easy time with this happening to her, because her parents were negligent of her needs, of the puppy's needs , because puppy's chew that is a known fact and that puppy is just a baby. Thank You, Tonya

How in the world can two people sleep while little toes are being eaten off? Sounds like poor parenting to me.
