From the Houston SPCA:

WHO: The 17th Annual Houston SPCA and Neiman Marcus Holiday Pet Adoption Event

WHAT: Cuddly canines and frolicking felines will delight the entire family as they play in their specially-decorated windows on the first floor of Neiman Marcus, Galleria. This year, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston has designed the windows using pieces from the "Best in Show" exhibit at the museum. Houston SPCA staff and volunteers will be on hand to assist potential adopters. The adoption fee for dogs and cats ranges from $65 to $95 and includes: Your new companion; Spay/neuter surgery; Initial set of shots, Rabies vaccination (three months of age or older), Deworming,
Feline Leukemia testing for cats, Heartworm testing for dogs (six months of age and older), and I.D. tag and Lifetime membership in the HSPCA Lost Pet Identification Program.

WHERE: Neiman Marcus, Galleria

WHEN: Friday, November 24, 2006 through Saturday, December 23. Holiday adoption hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm
and Sundays from noon to 5:00 pm.

I post this with the following caveat: Please DO NOT give an animal as a "surprise" Christmas gift. Adding a pet to your family should be a family decision: which pet woudl be the best for your lifestyle or living conditions? Who will be in charge of feeding and exercise? Can you afford the vet bills?

Yes, You should put a lot of thought into the animal you bring home and animals for gifts usually never work out like planned. I know this for sure when I had two Dalmatians here for years and years who people didn't like after bringing them home. You should also think about the animals characteristics and how it will fit into your living situation. Like the Dalmatians who need plenty of room to run and play and are very active animals. My daughter is in college and has many friends that have the cute little pocket doggies, well she called me and said her boyfriend wanted to buy her one, this is a bad idea. She is rarely home and lives in a college apartment and I told her I do not need another animal to take care of and I will end up with any animal she would get at this point. She agrees with me and said okay Mom I will not get another animal. My black Exotic was bought by her, and Boo Boo Kitty is my kitty now, not hers.

I agree with Tonya. I spend several hundred dollars on my pets a year. This year my 100 pounder, Duke got into something and almost died. This made my pet expense and the heart ache in the emergency vet from hundreds to thousands this year. Before deciding on adopting a pet the cost of vet care, food, toys, and other necessary items should be taken into account. We spend at least a hundred every time we go to Petco or Petsmart. This is when we get dog/cat food, litter, treats, and toys. Please take all of this into consideration before adopting a pet.
