Man details torture and killing of cat

Uh.. this really makes me wonder what goes through some people's minds... This is from KHOU.com's website..

A 21-year-old Dallas man calmly testified Wednesday about how he tortured a cat for "a big laugh," cutting its tail and ear off while the animal was still alive before setting it ablaze.

Then, he said, he ate the severed ear as a friend videotaped the episode.

Ryan Coleman seemed detached as he recounted the abuse he inflicted on the cat, including cutting off its tail with a kitchen knife.

"It came off pretty easily," Mr. Coleman said in court. "Inch-thick-steak easy."

Mr. Coleman, who has been in jail since February, pleaded guilty to a charge of animal cruelty on Tuesday. He said he hoped for probation but did not expect it.

"I deserve whatever you give me," he told the jury Wednesday as they prepared to determine his punishment.

Mr. Coleman's father, Robert Coleman, asked for leniency but described his son as a "sociopath" who had been an "ugly rotten kid."

"I've never heard him say he's sorry for what he did," he said. "I don't think he's capable of it."

Read the rest of the story on KHOU.com's website here.

And there's also this disturbing addendum from ReadLarryPowell.com:

FROM THE COURTHOUSE: One of our reliable tipsters has been attending the Dallas trial of Ryan Coleman who pled guilty Tuesday to animal cruelty in the case of Tiger the Cat. The trial is now in the punishment phrase, which means that evidence is being presented and that evidence will be used by a jury to determine what punishment should be applied. Tiger was mutilated before being killed in Nov. 2003 and it took a while to make the case, it seems.

As often happens in criminal cases, defense attorneys summoned family members to testify on the bad guy's behalf. The father of the accused, we're told, "first made sure that the courtroom knew he and his family were Mensa members and that the son he raised was a DISD chess champion -- 'a prodigy,' according to him."

The father also said he thought the son's killing of the cat stopped his bipolar son's out of control spiral. (Aside: Mensa member? I'll bet Mensa's reviewing those membership rules.)

The father, noting that his son had been in jail since February, testified that "enough is enough," says our courtroom monitor, who adds, "I wonder how much little Tiger thought was 'enough' as he was being tortured, shot, had his ear and tail cut off and was set on fire."

Ryan Coleman needs to be given the full 10 years for this horrible crime not only for punishment but to protect society from Mr. Coleman's very probable futurecrimes against a human victim.

Too often now we read about a cold blooded killer, highly intelligent and unfeeling murdering one or more victims for the thrill of it.

Another disturbing aspect of this trial is the father. It is reported that Mr. Coleman senior made it a point to inform all members of the court of the family's Mensa involvement and that enough was enough for his son to be in jail since February. Does Mr. Coleman feel that his family's higher I.Q should warrant leniency for his son? I am most curious to see what part the father played in the son's attitudes. Does this family feel their superior intelligence makes everyone or everything else below their intellect inferior? It would be most enlightening to learn just what attitudes this father really has as a way to gain insight into the son's actions. At any rate Ryan Coleman should be sentenced to the full 10 years, preferably locked up in a solitary animal shelter cage.

May this man rot in where the devil lives. He is a sick individual and who is to say that the next victim won't be a human being.

All of us in rescue work day and night 24/7 to save lives and this person does something so unthinkable and his father excuses it as "therapy"? Maybe the whole family should be put in jail. Oh, I contacted Mensa (very very nice folks there) and neither this man, nor his son are on their membership rosters. Me thinks the father is a bit deluded and the son is a sociopath.

I'm sitting here with tears running down my face, wondering how anyone could be so cruel to a poor defenseless animal! Enough is not enough! He deserves to be in jail for many, many years! Just think, if he would do that to a cat, what would he do to a child? Or even an adult, any human being! Especially if he is "a "sociopath" who had been an "ugly rotten kid." !!!!! As for his family, well, if they really are members of Mensa, that organization REALLY needs to rethink and review their membership policies!

Ryan Coleman, you are a sick human being and I hope you rot in jail!

Oh that just sickens me to the core. That poor, defenseless cat that had no idea why it was being tortured so horribly. I hope they lock him up and throw away the key. There isn't a punishment harsh enough for people who take pure enjoyment out of hurting other living creatures.

Shouldnt be a problem finding a suitable punishement!! I suggest they shoot him with a BB gun to paralyze him. Then let him lay around for several hours, put him in a trunk, tie his legs together, stomp on him, throw him, stab him in the buttocks (for lack of being able to cut off a tail), cut off his ear, and set him on fire!! Seems like the only fair punishment to me!!!
