Killer, the nervous Chihuahua, was rescued
from his abandoned home in Waveland,
Mississippi by the Humane Society
of Missouri
Disaster Rescue Team.
From the Humane Society of Missouri, here's a an online "book" of the combined rescue efforts of four groups who came together to help rescue Katrina's four legged victims. Together, the Humane Society of Missouri, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society of Southern Mississippi, and the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Together they rescued more than 10,000 animals, reunited hundreds of families with their pets, and found new homes for thousands more. The stories and photographs are now available online at www.katrinapettales.com.

They focus on the twenty-five harrowing days in late August and September of last year when literally thousands of animals 0-- some abandoned, others stranded, all in danger -- were rescued. Author, Dick Weiss, an award-winning former editor, reporter and writing coach for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and co-author Sally J. Altman conducted extensive interviews with each of the rescuers, foster pet parents, and the many hurricane victims who lost and then found their pets. The account also describes the hard-learned lessons from the disaster response and examines how agencies and government are working to incorporate family pets into disaster planning.
