Good Samaritan would rather let dog fend for itself than go to a "kill" shelter

This Good Samaritan, who saved a very old dog, sounds desperate to find help... so much so that she says if someone doesn't help her, she won't take the dog to a shelter.. she'd rather set him free to fend for himself. Her post on houston.backpage.com includes:

"I found a Schnauzer???? or terrier mix of some kind (although he looks to have been shaved) on our country road, very sweet boy however I cannot keep him. I have no place to hold him either. He is full of fleas, he has tape worm, he has rotted teeth, and giant holes in his gums...which I have never seen in my life and is totally freaking me out, he is an older dog since his face has a lot of grey hairs..."

She adds..

"This dog deserves someone to care and love him. He is sitting at my feet so happy right now and content to be in a house. I have kids, dogs, cats and a husband who will not tolerate another animal in the house.....I do not want him to go to a shelter and be put down. I dont care what anyone says about the SPCA, Caps, and BARC and so on......I will not do this to this dog. I would much rather set him free...and then pray someone else picks him up who will give him what he deserves...but I am scared he will get in the wrong hands."

You can get more information by reading the rest of the entry on houston.backpage.com here, as well as check out the pictures of this dog.

Can you give more information on him. Like is he nuetered, does he get along with children, is he good with other animals....any other information you can give will be good. He is so cute. I am going to talk to my husband tonight about it, but I don't know if it is hopeful we already have 2 dogs and a cat. We are about to get another rescue, as well. But there are always children at my house, I have 13 nieces and nephews and animals.
Thanks

Bless you Good Samaritan for taking the poor soul in!! And bless you Sheila for considering to help!! I have 4 (rescued) dogs and 11 cats (from the streets) that are mine. Plus right now I have 3 foster pups too!! And although I too dont like the thought of the him being put down at a shelter - there are worse things than euthanasia such as slowly starving to death!! Or dying from dehydration!! Neither death is pretty!! And in the shape he is in, there may not be many who would take him in. Although I pray that there is a better solution, if there is not, I would lovingly donate $$ to have you (or someone else that cares for him)take him to a vet and have him put down in a loving setting and in loving arms rather than be turned into a shelter!! Please dont understand - this would be a last option!! But please dont turn him loose - he wont be able to fend for himself!!

The poor thing! Thank you for taking him in but please don't set him free. Would you be able to keep him if we could come up with some donations for his care? I agree with Donna, if he has to be put down as a last resort, please accept financial help so it can be done in a vet's office. Let us know what the final solution is. I'll have nightmares wondering whether or not you put him back on the streets.

I sent the Good Samaritan an email last night after reading the info on the backpage.com. This was her answer to me at 9:41 pm :

"oh thank you for caring

I just found a home for him. A Rescue out of Galveston area came this evening and got him and will rehome him for me. It was a God send

thank you to everyone"

So - it appears there is a happy ending!!!

I cannot believe the emotional blackmail this woman used on overburdened rescuers! Turning the dog loose to fend for himself indeed...! As if starvation, auto accidents, possible torture, and a slow protracted death are preferable options to a quick, quiet, gentle, and sometimes caring death that I know CAP, SPCA, and many shelter staff provide for unwanted animals (sometimes, it's the only affection they ever receive!). If she (the rescuer) really believes that an old senior would suffer less alone, and on the road, she is a complete idiot - I don't consider her a 'good samaritan' at all!

I absolutely agree with mkm. I was disgusted reading this post. Leaving this poor old guy out there to suffer makes the "finder" no better than the dumper. I'm sorry, I don't consider a death by injection the worst thing that can happen to these poor creatures. Shame on you.
