Saving Animals Across Borders, which has been working with BARC to help spay/neuter pound dogs and cats, has just returned from Puerto Rico, where they trained local vets to use Neutersol - the chemical alternative to surgical sterilization. You can see pictures of the trip here. In the meantime, here's the a bit of the email I received from SAAB:

"The Puerto Rico Neutersol training trip was a huge success. Dr. Gwen Davis, veterinarian with the Puerto Rico Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), did an excellent job organizing two training sessions, the first at the Carolina Animal Control Center in San Juan and the second at The Pet Vet in Isabela. Both sessions were taught by Saving Animals Across Borders' Dr. Gil Costas, and were very well attended by local private veterinarians, animal shelter veterinarians, and representatives from animal protection organizations on the island.

For the demonstration in Carolina, adoption animals from the shelter were sterilized with Neutersol. These animals were micro-chipped and the shelter is going to follow their progress post-adoption. Animal guardians from the area were invited to bring their dogs for the demonstration at Isabela, in addition to the approximately 15 Satos who were sterilized and returned to their community. The Satos were identified with a permanent ear tattoo. Dr. Davis was also able to transport 5 dogs from an animal collector in Aguadilla for sterilization.

PAWS is interested in exploring the idea of creating a pilot community dog project with animals in Isabela. Isabella is a well-defined community of about 40,000 inhabitants and a significant community animal problem. If Dr. Davis is able to obtain the support of the Mayor of Isabella, we are going to explore the idea of collecting, sterilizing, vaccinating, identifying, and releasing community dogs. This would be a very good pilot project for Puerto Rico, and if successful, the project could be replicated in other parts of the Caribbean. In addition to Dr. Davis' established spay/neuter clinic at The Pet Vet, which is in Isabela, Neutersol would be an essential part of this project."
