From the Associated Press:

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Bullfight spectators in Mexico City got a lot closer to the action than they intended.

Several were injured when a thousand-pound bull nicknamed "Little Birdy" jumped into the stands yesterday. At least two people were hospitalized.

Television images show the bull jumping from the ring and spectators trying to scatter as the animal roared through the aisles.

One of the bullfighters eventually stabbed and killed the bull.

The incident didn't stop the event for long. The bullfighting resumed 30 minutes later.

This is such a cruel and sickening "sport". That poor thing was just trying to get away. I'm sorry but I dont have one ounce of sympathy for those people in the audience hurt by the bull. If they find pleasure in watching a living thing being tortured then they deserve to suffer the consequences.

I am VERY upset that channel 11 chose to run this piece about the bull "fight". Bull "torture than slaughter" is more like it.. This is such a BARBARIC "sport", why would you chose to show this?? Of course this poor animal was trying to get away, what would you expect!!!! I believe this is the worst kind of news reporting. What should be focused on is STOPPING animal cruelty, not condoning it.(Or recording it for sensationalism). I am VERY disgusted with this station, that was revolting...If this is what you will stoop to---then shame on you.

Why would you think Channel 11 - or my blogsite - necessarily condones something because we have it on our air/blogsite? Does this mean we are for/against the war when we air stories on it? This blogsite and Channel 11 have done several stories on puppy mills and animal abuse. Does that mean we condone those? It is our job at Channel 11 to inform the public about the news of the day; whether you morally agree with the issue being presented is your personal decision. Spain and Mexico treasure their bullfights. That is the opinion of many of their citizens. Intelligent viewers in Houston can make their own decisions about WHY the bull jumped into the stands. I wonder if many of our viewers even realized how bulls die slow deaths in these bullfights and are killed for sport. I would wager that many people who saw that story learned how cruel bullfighting can be, and have likely been swayed to your opinion as well.

Yes, I know you have done stories on animal abuse, that is one reason I am a loyal viewer. I have thought of you as a champion of animals. I know you must present the "news of the day"... Maybe Spain and Mexico DO treasure their bullfights, how very sad...
I did NOT see any explanation in this piece about the torture or slow death of the bull. I'll bet many people did not realize that little "ribbon" shown on the side of the bull was attached to a blade, one of MANY that would pierce the animals skin before it met its SLOW, PAINFUL death.Maybe my comments were too harsh, but I did find that story very disturbing. Please forgive my delivery ...but my message still stands. Thank you for letting me voice my opinion.

Dinah - I am always happy to have discussions about stories. I intend for this forum to be open for all. Your comments, for instance, have added to the blog post.. and those who see it will have even more information about this "sport."

While on my honeymoon 2 weeks ago in Puerto Vallarta every Wednesday 5 pm sharp they have a bull fight in the arena in town. We met up with another couple who were enthusiatic about going and they invited us along. I told my husband that it is his decision if he wanted to go, but there was no way in HE77 I would be going to something where people get joy out of watching animals being tortured and killed. He didn't believe me that they actually killed the bull. The had pamphlets at the front desk and I told him to read it and yes they do indeed kill the bull and they think it is an honor to kill it. Yeah, that's fair trap a bull into a pen, give it no where to go and then torture it. When I saw this aired, I told my husband that I do not feel sorry for ANY of those people who attneded. Serves them right. It is about time something like this happens. I would never participate, or support anything like this. I can't believe people still do stuff like this.
Needless to say, my husband chose not to go...we went parasailing instead!

it's sad that these people don't have annything better to do with their free time then watch poor animals be tortured and killed i don't think these matadors are brave men. i think they are cowards, get in the ring with no weapons, like the bull and then see how brave they'd be!!!
