Recently by KGW Meteorologist Joe MichaelsA large and growing wildfire is raging near Mt. Adams tonight. That fire, the Cold Springs Fire, is a tough one to fight because the weather just isn't cooperating. Hot temperatures and low humidity are the main culprits, and there isn't much relief on the horizon. Of course, here in the Pacific Northwest the ocean - and cool and moist ocean air - is never all that far away. Unless you live on the eastern side of the Cascades. The ... It has been a long and chilly spring. Most temperatures have been unseasonably cool. June has brought a spat of near record-cold high temperatures. So some of you may be asking...and perhaps screaming...why? Blame our good friend La Nina. This phenomenon - the cooler-than-average Pacific waters - cause worldwide changes to the atmospheric winds and weather patterns. It's bringing cooler-than-average temperatures into the Northwest... Many of you may already know - I'm a transplant. I grew up in >> Continue reading: Just a glimmer Update - 1:00pm, Wednesday The snow level looks to stay around 1,000 feet from now through Friday - but in heavier showers, some snow could fall all the way down to the surface. We saw that earlier today, with reports of snow in Southeast Portland, Camas, and Cannon Beach. There was also snow at the Oregon Zoo and near the Terwilliger curves.
It looks like the snow lev... Today's temperatures have reached into the 60s - again! Believe it or not, we also saw temperatures in the 60s yesterday. This marks the third time this spring we've seen consecutive 60-degree days.
It's always tough to get a real, old-fashioned snowstorm here in the Northwest. Getting that right combination of ample moisture and cold air can seem impossible, especially for a frustrated snow lover. =) But we did get just enough moisture overnight and this morning, combined with the cold air, that some snow showers were falling. Most places that got some snow in the city only got some light accumulations - but it was still a ple... Our typically mild winter weather is about to be pushed out of here - by an arctic airmass! High temperatures today actually reached into the lower 40s, but the winds are beginning to pick up out of the east. That easterly wind - what's a warm wind in the summer - is a very cold wind this time of year. In fact, the Gorge will essentially become a wind tunnel that will allow cold arctic air to spill into the valleys west of the Cascad... What's that...what won't stop? The snow! There has been an amazing stretch of snowy weather in the Cascades over the past few weeks, and it continues. The base at Timberline is already well over 100 inches, and we're going to add to it - significantly - over the next 48 hours. Another strong winter storm is expected to barrel through the Northwest, and that means more mountain snow. In fact, by this time Wednesday morning, there co... So here we are, 9:30 on the night before Christmas. Not a creature is stirring - except for the Christmas storm that is getting closer and closer to the Northwest! But will that storm bring a white Christmas to Portland? The latest computer model updates have recently come in, and they are largely unchanged - which means my forecast of rain, and only rain, in Portland for tomorrow afternoon still looks pretty reliable. Of course, ab... Working in television has many perks and benefits - but it also comes with some negatives. One of those negatives is the wacky schedule! =) But there's one day that you may be surprised to learn that I don't mind working, and that day is Christmas Eve.
